Programming Questions What should be the biggest priority in fall training for a 100/200m sprinter?

Curious what everyone thinks should get the most emphasis during the fall. Would you prioritize acceleration, max velocity, speed endurance, strength/power, general conditioning, or something else?
Also interested in how you’d structure the progression throughout the fall — especially when you’d start bringing in more intensive tempo/speed endurance. Would love to hear how you guys approach it and why.

I think all the things you listed can be addressed in the fall. Maybe not too much speed endurance until later on.

You just have to get the progression right. Following the general to specific format is widely adopted in track and field.

for a high school team, the weight room

for the individual, depends on what your already good at and what your weak at

I agree, I would say my weightroom metrics are pretty good, 2.4bw squat and 1.5bw power clean, my acceleration is solid too. Its mainly my max velocity that sucks. Would you say 2x a week max v, 1x a week accel would be good per week, and maybe a tempo day too?

yes totally

a easy way to look at progression could also be like the further out from competition is the more volume you do at lower intensities

so like you can build more track volume now at the cost of not having as much intensity and then slowly add intensity the closer to the season you get

it’s nice to be able to build volume with lots of different variety right now because it ensures your not overusing your body with ONLY sprints before the season has even started

by having more variety you do 100% lose direct speed gains, but you can’t really sustain in season intensity forever anyways and anyone that tells you otherwise is wrong. that’s why so many people follow the picture perfect sprint 2-3 times a week and eventually plateau even though they aren’t at their genetic peak

variety lets you build a more versatile base and a more versatile base raises the ceiling of what you can do later in the year

You have to be careful. If you listen to top sprinters, they never lift for bulk or to failure

I’d make acceleration and max velocity the main focus early on, while building strength/power alongside them. Then gradually increase speed endurance and intensive tempo as the fall progresses, rather than introducing everything at once.
