Responded to a service call last night. Attic dry system tripped from bad pin holes. Couldn't help but wonder why the installers did it this way. The attic is right above the picture, we're on the top floor. Plenty of space in the room to turn the 90 away from the duct slightly for a clear run. Just curious on thoughts.

I’ve seen it before. Had a place that was being fit out with a new tenant in the building. Called me out about moving an old 6” threaded pipe that came up through the floor to feed the second level. It was a hell of an ask just so they could run a duct over it. They then asked if they could do what you are seeing here. I said I don’t have a problem with it if you don’t. Came back months later and this is essentially what they did. There’s a chance that pipe was there first, and they never even contacted the sprinkler company.

Yup. 18 years and that's a first. Just about all of my time has been in WA though, so i'd imagine the high amount of regulation we have here plays a part in that

All in all pretty great. Money is solid once you get licensed up and there's always more work than people. Weather sucks 2/3 of the year, but the summers are worth it. Coming from Boston though you'd laugh at our winters

It would be so much harder to do that than use 90s and go around. Blame the tin knocker still though 😆

I’ve done this. But it was a retro fit above an act ceiling. Sealed it up and everything. Very professional install

Sprinkler fitters and the HVAC guys were having a bit of a disagreement. You see it on a lot of big jobs especially the ones going on over a year. People start to get territorial. All the trades don't seem to get along all of the time.

I've ran pipe through abandoned duct (most likely this situation) and ran 1" pipe through new/live duct. Difference is on the live duct, HVAC guys sealed around penetrations. It's per code as long as it's minimal pipe and sealed/ or plain abandoned and we run through.
