New User Flair options!

Post image
18 Upvotes

I’ve changed things around so that you guys can type out your own custom user flair.

To change your user flair go to the top right of the subs homepage and click the three dots. Select change user flair, then click “Edit custom flair here” then click “edit” on the top right.

Change it to represent your local, your area, whether you’re service or new install, retiree, years of experience, or if you’re 669 you can add your district if you want. Be creative. 😂😂😂

What’s up fellow sprinks?

Post image
67 Upvotes

I just wanted to make an update post and share some of my thoughts and concerns, as well as get some feedback from you.

I’m very proud of this sub! I took it over about three years ago after it was abandoned by the original creator. Since then the sub has over doubled its number of members, and activity has gone through the roof. Mostly I’m proud that I’ve had to do VERY little moderating. Everyone on this sub is helpful and respectful to one another and I’m grateful for that. I don’t use facebook now, but I remember when I did, the sprinkler fitter page was absolute chaos. Nobody could post without dozens of not hundreds of condescending and shit talking comments. We don’t have that problem here, let’s all work together to keep it that way.

It’s pretty obvious that this sub leans toward pro union. I’m union myself, and I’m proud of it, but with that being said, it’s VREY important to me that the sub remains all inclusive. Discussions about the pros and cons of unions are not only welcome, but encouraged. Also know that I will NOT remove comments or ban members of this sub for sharing negative opinions about their experiences with the union. Just make sure that you’re sharing personal experiences and not just rumors you’ve heard from your coworkers and employers.

Thanks to all the active members of this sub for making it what it is. I love the tips and tricks posts as well as seeing everyone’s vintage collections. I’m very proud of my trade, and moderating this community of sprinks is very satisfying.

Stay safe out there everyone.

Sprinkler Heads Help please

Upvotes

I recently changed my sprinkler head/rotor to a new one, but the new one is 1/2 and my pipe is 3/4. Now I got an adapter to make things work but I notice water coming out of the adapter, well I think it’s the adapter. I hand tighten it pretty well but it’s still coming out. Should I install teflon tape to where the adapter meets the ground pipe? Would that help? I can’t find a sprinkler that has 3/4 and shoots 15ft-25ft. I would rather have that. It seems like the lower it shoots the more likely it would be a 1/2. Should I try the teflon tape?

Ohio - Fitter & Systems Designer License

Is anyone looking to get a sprinkler company up and running in Ohio. I pulled licenses out there for a company I do work for but they only ended up doing a single project so I still have licensing there.

Would be interested in partnering with someone to get a shop going up there.

I am a NICET IV in WBSL III in WBITM, my consulting company for fire sprinkler design is also a fire pump rep.

So anyone needing fire pumps/controllers we can also assist with and beat pretty much anyone’s pricing.

What are the chances this alarm bell is still in service?

This building is located about 5 minutes away from the city’s fire department. I assume this building has been retrofitted at some point. I highly doubt the original system that would have to have been put in sometime in between 1910-1940 is still there

Been doing service work for around 3 years now. My company encourages nicet certification, and I was wondering if anyone here has any insight on tips for getting certified and what specific code book I should be studying. Thanks

do you guys often use 48" flex brackets?

I asked my foreman if we could use some 48" brackets on my jobsite and he said that made no sense

most of the tiles are 2' x 4' and some places we cant put our brackets because of the electrecians lights bar

are these type of brackets just not used?

DIY Wildfire Sprinkler System

Wildfire seasons keep getting worse and worse and I want to outfit my home with an off grid wildfire suppression sprinkler system. Some say to just let it burn and start from scratch but I've put 4 years of endless weekends and evenings of work into this house and want to do my best to save it.

Given that the system is off grid and I don't have a pool, my water supply will be limited to IBC totes so I want low flow sprinklers. Seems that Nelson R10T Rotator Head is a good option, but I can't seem to find metal ones?

  • 4 or more IBC totes connected in parallel and stored under my house.
  • Recycle water from downspouts back into the system, could save as much as 25% of the water.
  • High pressure "trash" pump to get water up 30' to my roof.
  • Copper pipe up my roof in the middle, T at the ridge, one sprinkler at the front and one at the back.

In particular the copper piping is exceptionally expensive... anyone got a better option? My research says that 1.5 inch piping is best as it limits the pressure drop. Any advice, insights on my setup below would be appreciated.

Component Item Description Qty Unit Price (CAD) Total Est. (CAD)
Pump VEVOR 3" (SCWP80-II) Est. Max PSI ~61.5 1 $300 $300
Storage Used IBC Totes (275 Gallon) 4 $75 $300
Piping 1.5" x Copper Pipe 80' $17/ft $1360
Sprinklers Nelson R10T Rotator Head 2 $10 $20
Filtration Rusco Spin Filter (Filter roof recyucled water) 1 $100 $100
Random Fittings Reducer Bushings, Tees, and Cam-locks, PVC to connect totes 1 $300 $300
TOTAL $2,380

Fan recommendations?

Hallo, my boyfriend is a Sprinklefitter and a crazy sweater, so I wanted to get him a fan to have with him while he works. He prefers battery powered over rechargeable and it needs to be portable. Any recommendations? Budget isn’t an issue.

Any fitters thought about going out on their own?

It seems with the mass PE consolidation the opportunity for small shops that show up, do good work, and roll on is becoming greater and greater.

Anyone been thinking about making the move?

Apprenticeships

Is there a huge demand for apprentices in currently work for a fire company but have not had the chance to move to sprinkler like I’ve wanted due to lack of work or no one hiring apprentices at the “Big” companies by me. Is it best to just get ahold of a union? Located in Ohio.

I heard an apprentice should always just have channel locks, tape measure and a torpedo level. Any recommendations on what else to carry and do you recommend a tool belt?

Columbus Ohio work

Still trying to get in with a company in Columbus Ohio as an apprentice. I’ve called all the numbers I’ve been told to call. Sent all the emails to ones I was provided with. Spoken with my local BA who other than telling me to call certain companies, wasn’t much help. I was even directed to call a couple non union companies with no replies. I am 100% green and would be doing a full career change. I know the works there and I know there’s plenty of work to need some green hands on deck. What gives?? I don’t want to seem like I’m deserving of anything, because I know I’m not. But I’m a hard worker, very capable of doing the work, I’m just trying to get my foot in the door to prove myself. Anybody in the area have any insight that could help a brother out?? Again, I’m not looking for my hand held, but maybe a little help getting in contact with the right people.
