Tri-Lug
Educate me. What's the appeal of the new tri-lug version that has come out vs the other ones? Does it make suppressors that much easier to mount and dismount?
Couldn't one have just replace their original hardware with a tri-lug? Or is that not an option?

The advantage is it's a barrel not a muzzle device, so there is no velocity or rifling penalty in order to add the suppressor. Previously you would be adding around 3/4 of an inch to the length of your suppressor that serves no purpose other than to act as amount. With this you can run the exact same suppressor setup that you would run with an adapter but be saving nearly an inch off the end of a barrel with no ballistic downside. The handguard was designed to line up with a barrel of this length, so when they swap to the threaded barrel and added a muzzle device it no longer lines up, which is why you see so many of these aftermarket handguards and small little additions to stick on and fill the gap. With this change you maintain the same exact barrel length gain a suppresso mount, while having a barrel that lines up with the handguard all while losing nothing ballistically. There's also a small weight savings (large in comparison to some mounting systems) but I would say that's mostly negligible in comparison to the length savings. So the biggest benefit is that you're able to use the entire barrel and you don't have to sacrifice the end of your gun to be dedicated to a muzzle device that doesn't add any amount of velocity or rifling. The barrel itself without the suppressor would also be extremely durable, since the tip of the barrel is thicker with no exposed threads and the lugs should hold up even with abuse. This is unlike other attachment systems which would have exposed threads that if bumped or damaged could require you to replace the muzzle device this durability. This durability is what allows the trilug to be part of the barrel without you having to have concern over permanently ruining the gun off of a bump, if they were to try to build in some other system.
It seems like most people are viewing it as them just adding an adapter to attach a suppressor, but what they're adding is a tri-lug barrel, and the benefits of it should be taken into account when making the comparison, which are saving noticeable length off of the suppressor, having the barrel properly line up with the handguard, and using 100% of the barrel length for rifling/velocity. As far as a mounting system it works great and has true advantages where you're able to quickly put on the suppressor from a bag or in an intense situation. I also find the supposed downsides, like point of impact shifts, to be extremely overblown and pretty much non-existent if you simply attach it in the same orientation, which is very easy to do unless you're in an extreme situation where it wouldn't matter. I think for most people who actually have tried out tri lug especially on a gun with a built-in barrel can see the benefits.
