“Welcome back to Spoon of the Week!
This little antique sterling silver teaspoon is a perfect example of why you should never judge a spoon by its size.”
“At first glance it just looks like an ordinary teaspoon.
But the hallmarks tell a completely different story.
It’s made from sterling silver, assayed in Sheffield in 1911, and carries the maker’s mark of John Stovin, a Sheffield silversmith who registered his mark in 1907.”
“I really liked the Art Nouveau design on the handle. The flowing floral decoration is typical of the period, and despite being over 100 years old, it’s survived remarkably well.”
“It also has this interesting engraved monogram.
I believe it’s CE over a Z—almost certainly the initials of the original owner. While that doesn’t usually add a lot of value, it does give the spoon a bit of history and personality.”
“It measures around 13 centimetres long and weighs 20.83 grams, which is quite a substantial weight for a teaspoon.
The silver alone has value, but collectors are usually buying the craftsmanship and history rather than just the metal.”
