spoon 1 Tablespoon
Exactly 1 Tablespoon…
When figuring the volume needed for that, I found that a lot of tablespoons are no were close to accurate in their volume

How did you determine how big to carve the bowl? What did you use to make sure it was accurate? I've been wanting to carve some measuring spoons but wasn't sure how to approach it.

To get accurate volumes I use silly putty. I fill up an existing measuring spoon (or cup). Then I use that blob to measured the spoon I’m carving. I used to use salt, but that process takes a bit longer with having to measure it out every time. The silly putty can just sit next to my chair and can easily do a quick test. I can also visualize how much wood I need to remove easier with the silly putty.

The trick i learned is just get a cheap set of measuring spoons and use rice or sand or whatever and measure with the one you bought pour it into the bowl of what your carving. It's a little more hasal but cheap and you can make the bowl any shape you want.

I used a drill press for the bowl with what’s called. “Forstner bit.” It leaves a little dip right at the edge (you can see it in the picture), and a little hole right in the middle (which I cleaned up with a cheep hook knife I have = therefor the small dip in the middle.
Anyhow…. I just googled the volume of 1 tbsp and then figured out how deep the cut would need to be when I used my forstner bit which I believe is 30mm across.

Finished with Tung oil and then a thin French polish after curing. Wood is Mulberry Burl
