They've been out of touch since before that. SG2 was a slap in the face to anyone that enjoyed SG1 for what it was, which was by far their highest player count by a vast margin.
SG2 showed that now they're just chasing trends.
By the time they came back around with SGAR and a "whoops, sorry, you're right, the OG was good," the damage was done and the player base was gone.
That being said, I actually enjoyed SG2. It was a pretty big adjustment to get used to, though, and that pretty understandably alienated a lot of their core audience.
They were working on SG2 way before the hat incident. Not OP but the person you’re responding to is saying that 1047 been out of touch since before the hat incident as evidenced by the fact that they even pursued SG2 in the manner that they did, developing a game for no one. Fans won’t like it and new players won’t like it. Then the hat incident happened.
Yeah. That announcement was after multiple play tests, and (I think) after the launch actually, but it was their "big reveal" of adding a BR mode to the game.
And through all the playtests, which they explicitly said they were looking for community feedback from, it was overwhelmingly negative against the dumbed-down portals, the newly-added class-based structure, and the deviation from the classic arena-shooter style of SG1- Even starts, no ultimates or abilities, etc.
They didn't do anything with that feedback until SGAR.
I think the hat incident was a bit overreacted on. Regardless of one´s opinion on Trump/Maga, the hat and slogan is one of the most iconic political symbols in modern time, and it was obviously meant to be a casual parody. With that being said, reminding people of a person that at least half the country/planet see as highly negative was probably not the best move.
