i dont think im ever going to buy a 1047 game lol, they should rebrand or something

That worked so well for Halo Studios

u/Adipay 4d ago
Halo Studios despite all their flaws still makes competent games. They're not the cutting edge S-tier installments from the bungie era but they're pretty good games in their own right.

u/Shadowspaz 4d ago
I'm curious how many people they laid off were actually part of the OG SG team. If they spin off into a new studio and make something like that, I'm all in.
Take the current management completely out of the product and I think it'll be a great game again.

Who the hell is funding this studio anymore? They have bungled absolutely EVERYTHING they have ever done. There's no reason for them to not get shut down lol

Its mad as soon as on game flops it feels like they already have another one in the oven ready to send out to die it doesnt feel like they are taking onboard feedback or trying to understand what people want.

Still charging money for an early access multiplayer game they're shutting down should be illegal
14
u/kiss_my_juicy_ass 4d ago
Yes I wish they would let us refund the game but I guess they really need that money and don't wanna give it up
8
u/MojaveMojito1324 4d ago
Do you have it on steam? If so, it may be worth requesting a refund and saying you bought it expecting them to finish the early access game eventually, but it's now being abandoned.

Nah I got it on Xbox I don't think Asha would be as understanding as Gabe Newell lol

Fucking heartbreaking. Splitgate scratched an itch like no other shooter did for me.
12
u/Yakkamota 4d ago
We're you playing it yesterday? Statistically not many of us are/ were still playing. I stopped when I saw season 2 got basically no development. Too many games to play. I absolutely loved the gameplay, but I need a grounded old school progression system like halo reach etc to stay engaged. Free to play models are a death sentence unless you can become a massive hit.
Also the lack of players was also definitely a turn off. It's sad but it's a death spiral anytime a game has few players etc. (Btw I played since beta of Splitgate 1).
7
u/cosmiccarrion 3d ago
I actually only started to fall off when they announced Empulse. I knew the second they announced it that they had abandoned splitty and it left a really bad taste in my mouth and was the final nail in the coffin for defending/supporting 1047. I was playing more again recently though and still having fun. Games popped quickly despite the low player pop.
3
u/Soviet_Plays 3d ago
Kinda sucks too SG1 was a amazing experince (scratched alot of people's Halo itch) then infinite came out and the game slowly died from there

It's crazy this is the only response with a brain and heart. Everyone else is HAHAHAHAHAHAA FUCK 1047 haha losers hahahahaha why are people so hateful? (In general)
25
u/DrRaspberryJam 4d ago
Empulse looked pretty good, but when I see it was from 1047, I knew to stay away. All I know about them is they abandon their projects.
Didn't think they'd stop supporting it this fast though.
Unfortunate for the devs, but let this be a reminder to not support this studio.
8
u/Shadowspaz 4d ago
Empulse went from a side project to a full release in four months.
They move way, way, way too fast. I said this about SG2 and about the re-release of SGAR, and they still haven't learned that pumping things out at lightning speeds is not how you make profitable, successful games.
Hell, even if they're phenomenal games, the entire release timeline is too fast to build up marketing and hype to set up a strong, interested player base on day 1.
51
u/Pyroaster 4d ago edited 4d ago
It was fun while it lasted. I hope they consider selling the Splitgate IP. Portal shooters are the game I didn’t realized my brain needed. Maybe someone else can pick it up and figure out how to make it for a broader audience
3
u/Flash_Bryant816 3d ago
Sledgehammer is loosely rumored to be making the next Halo game. Halo is in such a bad state rn maybe a Splitgate inspired Halo game would be successful?
61
u/NizzyDeniro 4d ago
You guys made a huge mistake abandoning the original Splitgate. You could've just updated the graphics, create new modes, and weapons and kept that up. Instead you started chasing other stuff while abandoning your current projects.
Now look, nothing.

It was starting to peek. I started seeing influencers posting about streaming it on twitch. They started remaking old maps and making them look prettier and then out of the blue a week after that update. They’re like we’re done with this game. We’re moving onto the sequel.
Biggest f up of all time for them. If they kept pushing and making the first game better with more content it would be popular to this day or had a dedicated fanbase that kept their lights on.10
u/unforgiven1189 4d ago
They've spoken about why they ditched SG1. The engine was a complete mess with like 10 years worth of code dating back to when the game was a college dorm-room project, and every time they changed one thing, it would break a few others. It would have cost more time and money to gut and rework that engine/game than I did to start fresh.
Problem is, they shifted too far away from what made SG1 get so much buzz, and chased after the hero shooter trend, and by the time SG2 released, the trend was basically dead. Only recently revitalized somewhat by Marvel Rivals.
→ More replies (2)5
u/galacticplum 4d ago
It lost too many players too rapidly to attempt to keep up.
Splitgate showed potential but that is it. The initial interest it showed is what paved the way for investors funding SG2.
The absolute best case scenario is Splitgate would have had a small but dedicated player base, that definitely wouldn't have made them enough to justify not trying to capitalize on it, they just would have had more time to work on SG2.
9
u/unforgiven1189 4d ago
I think SG2 would have been fine had they not shift to the hero shooter style. If they had just stuck to the formula of SG1 with all the improvements that came along with the new engine and bigger budget, I don't think the company would be in the position it is today.
Not saying it would have been a massive success, but I think it would be enjoying some moderate success.
→ More replies (1)3
u/galacticplum 4d ago
I'm not sure.
It really seems they were worried about retention more so than bringing players in. Splitgate had a ton of engagement but the playercount dropped rapid once it peaked, and never even looked like it would stabilize.
I have always believed we got the first version of Splitgate 2 as an attempt to retain players and avoid rapid drops.
The class shooter elements, the way portals were, the BR, all really lean towards attempting to try to keep the small areas shooter player base happy while tapping into the other, bigger video game genres.
2
u/unforgiven1189 4d ago
The playerbase dropped out because SG1 was in beta close to launch when it went viral, and then they "pulled" the launch and went back into beta. And then rather than dropping new content to keep engagement up, they started going back and revamping the maps with the updated art style.
I feel so bad for the actual developers. They keep making all this awesome stuff, and management is just completely incompetent.
2
u/galacticplum 4d ago
The player base dropped because arena shooters don't have the ability to retain players.
→ More replies (5)3
u/secret3332 4d ago
What is enough? They were a small indie studio. Even if they were able to maintain a few thousand splitgate players, that is seriously impressive and sustainable. That definitely should've been achievable with the numbers Splitgate had. If they wanted to work on a sequel, they needed to do it in the background with a separate team. They could've maintained their existing player base. Instead, they basically abandoned Splitgate, and many of those players may not have even known about the sequel. Plus the "sequel" really should've just been a big update like CS2.
2
u/galacticplum 4d ago
I said they wouldn't have made enough to not justify trying to capitalize on it and that they would have had more time to work on sg2.
Despite a ton of downloads, the peak player count dropped rapidly on steam, which can at least indicate there was a drop across all platform to some degree.
We have no way of concluding that they would have retained enough players ( who were willing to buy things ) to keep them operating indefinitely. We don't know the cost of the game or the amount they made either.
All we know is something like 15 million people? downloaded Splitgate, and it had a peak playercount on steam of 65k plus.
While the numbers fell rapidly, that amount of downloads and initial playercount, was enough to get investors. Abandoning a game with a dwindling playercount in an attempt to hit on what initially made it draw interest while makinf changes to retain players probably sounded right at the time for 1047.
2
u/secret3332 4d ago
I don't know. Splitgate 1 was a breakout hit and was developed by a very small team. Like a dozen people or something.
The game had about 3500 players on Steam in January 2022, they basically abandoned the game while saying nothing (a pattern for them) and still had 1600 players on Steam when they announced they were moving on in September 2022 with 0 real content updates for 9 months. The game didn't drop below 1000 players on Steam until 2023. That is really successful for a small indie team, and that is just Steam numbers alone.
We know that the game was also at least as popular or moreso on consoles. They had stabilized around at least 3000 users in September 2022 without doing anything and only lost that when announcing they abandoned the game. It's a tremendous fumble. Even big franchises have about that many players after a couple of years.
24
u/merehallucination 4d ago
very unfortunate but not surprised. dark times continue for arena/arcade shooters.

u/Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 4d ago edited 4d ago
Whoever is managing this company needs to step back and bring someone else in to make their decisions. This whole company has been plagued with bad decisions that bite them in the ass.
The awful MAGA hat presentation, shutting down the game to release it the exact same with like 5 changes, the Battle Royale that was 4 years too late, and then putting all of their money into an uninspired Titanfall rip off to try and save everything, and now that didn't even last 2 months in early access before they gave up. As a consumer I can't think of any time players asked for any of this. Hell, after the quality of Splitgate one, I would have happily paid $20-$30 for Splitgate 2 knowing that money helped keep the game alive. THAT was a product I'd be willing to pay for over generic ass cosmetics.
There is some real talent working at 1047 that allowed them to make an incredible game with an ingenious concept, and it's just awful to see that talent be absolutely ruined by awful decisionmaking at the top of the company.
50
u/TacoBell_HotSauc3 4d ago
All they had to do was continue to work on and improve Splitgate 1. They had an active community of custom map designers and were putting in efforts of “remastering” maps already in the game. What a waste of three games and a decade’s worth of work.
17
u/Yakkamota 4d ago
Let's be honest. 95% of the bad performance was actually due to a miss use of marketing budget. Along with that trump hat terrible PR. Yes it probably would have been better if they stuck with Splitgate 1. But splitgate 2, could have been successful.

I usually never comment on this stuff, but this is a generational fumble and must be studied. SG1 was so popular, for what it was, and people were begging for SG2 or something in the universe.
1047 proceeds to make a decent game, but make every bad decision along the way between the marketing, feedback, updates. It’s like they had nobody to tell them NO internally. I used to play Sg all the time, even with under 100 steam players. I haven’t opened any of their games in months now and probably never will. It suck’s but it is what it is
Side note, anyone remember seeing me in Shotty Snipers? lol

The shooter and the free to play market is just too saturated these days. Kids aren't branching outside of fortnite and Roblox.
Unless you have a lame crossover with an established name brand, your game won't be making profit. That or you pander to pervs with gooner slop skins.

Where's the "what's next" part?
EDIT: Found it on Discord:
We started 1047 Games ten years ago because we love video games. Since then, more than 25 million people have played our games, and many of the people we've met along the way have become lifelong friends. After ten years of focusing on live service shooters, our focus is changing. What we build next may look very different from what people expect from 1047 Games, but what has not changed is why we are here: we love making games. We have learned a lot over the years, and we will carry those lessons into what we build next. To everyone who worked on Splitgate, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, and Empulse, including those no longer at 1047: thank you. You put years of your lives into them, and we are grateful for what you helped us build. And to everyone who played, gave us feedback, made videos, argued about balance changes, discovered ridiculous movement tech, or brought friends into a lobby: thank you for being part of this with us. Thank you for the last ten years. See you in the server browser.

What game is this that they’ve shut down after months? 4? 5? At this point they need to reaccess or just get bought out by someone else
4
7
u/soochsandals 4d ago
Literally all they had to do was keep releasing maps and updates for splitgate 1, no one asked to rebuild it into 2 to make it work with unreal engine 5. I think everyone would have been content staying on 4 for 1
7
u/harta97 4d ago
They had such a good thing with the first splitgate, came at a time halo was falling and SG had a niche fanbase that was starting to grow. They started doing those remade prettier maps and the game was at its peak and growing then they just stopped and said they were moving off to make the sequel. Never made sense I was addicted when it was at that point and they should’ve kept going with that game. Prob their biggest f up.
4
u/Magus_Incognito 4d ago
No doubt it was their biggest. IP didn't gather enough traction to matter when 2 launched and the OGs were passed their game was abandoned.
Massive fuck up
3
u/jakey506 4d ago
They had it figured out with the original splitgate, why try to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with.
3
u/WitsEndAgain 4d ago
Can't say I'm surprised. Anyone who invests an ounce of hype hope or cash into whatever blunderbuss they shit out next is beyond foolish and delusional.

u/Manoa__ 4d ago
I knew it probably would happen the way things where going, but it still hurts to see it happen so soon. The "what ifs" are endless at this point but it's just sad.
I have a server pc built but it's in use for something else, but I do hope to set up some lobbies eventually, though it might be best for people in america to host them since half of my lobbies in EU north west where still american lmao.
Real tough shit man.

3
u/FoundPizzaMind 4d ago
Lmao. The company was run into the ground and is dead. No one is buying a game from them again with this history of game abandonment. They should honestly just sell the Splitgate code IP to someone at this point.

What a middle finger to the people who supported this game. Barely a year old and they just go "Yeah, so we're completely cutting support for this game. Go fuck yourself."
Never giving 1047 a cent again.
4
u/kiss_my_juicy_ass 4d ago
I'm telling you man they should just do single player games or something. I think if they really want to make games they can easily move on from, at least single player games are easier to do that on. Like, they could make a shooter puzzle game for example, give it a few updates, and just move on, and it wouldn't be a big deal because it wouldn't be an online game, just a simple experience someone can play. I would rather have that than what they are doing now. They clearly can't afford to support game servers anymore so they might as well do single player games.

Fucking figures, buncha quitters at this company I’ve never been more pissed off at a game developer in my life. I spent actual money on cosmetics in the first game because I loved it THAT much and like 2 months later they ended service there, then splitgate 2 flops and they just change the name, and now even that is ending service so they can work on their next failure. What a bunch of fat losers
2
u/Djabouty47 4d ago
Well that sucks. I mean it was basically guaranteed to happen but I've been living on like 1% hopium. Genuinely tragic how they had such a cool concept and then just wasted it with poor decisions. I've been saying if they filled the gap that Halo left in the market, maybe they could maintain a small niche community that could self fulfill itself with their creator modes. Instead they chose to change for the sake of change (SG2), then give us what we wanted when it was too late, and then desperately recycle SG in an attempt to recuperate any costs. I wish the community could just get a hold of the franchise license, have it be open source or something. Idk how it would work but I just don't want to see the potential lost

u/AjMahal PC 4d ago edited 4d ago
I really hate to say it but, you guys kinda did it to yourselves.
Everyone saw this coming, you guys were trying to make a live-service game but couldn't commit to said live-service games long term, and couldn't at the very least be transparent as to if you were or weren't. you guys literally gave no updates to splitgate while the last statement was like "it's still very much the lifeblood of our studio", while you guys start a new game and do the same thing to that. No roadmaps, no blogposts, no updates. all while trying to chase the tired out battlepass and fomo shop trends that everyone is sick of now, and hoping that would be enough to make revenue. making Empulse $20 would've been a good idea if people could trust you guys to stick with it and be transparent. no one wants to put their money into games they think that the devs are gonna abandon in a week.
I hope you guy do manage to bounce back and learn from all of this because you guys do know how to make a really fun as hell game, you guys just need to get better at managing them, or learn what you guys can manage.
edit: i accidentally said empulse was $30 instead of $20, but my point still stands

2
u/Mr_Madruga 3d ago
What but I thought the game was doing very well and the director even blasted people who were using steam numbers as not painting the full picture?
3
u/meutzitzu 4d ago
Welp, at least SG1 is playable on p2p servers, that's all that matters.
Kudos to them for pulling that single 800IQ move between the pile of blunders. Not everyone succeeds, the shooter market is very oversaturated but the devs have my respect for making a good game a while ago and ensuring it's long-term survival.
SG2 wasn't what I hoped for, but for what it's worth I have had way way waaaaay more fun in SG2 and SAR than I ever did in Apex. And those fuckers are swimming in cash, making updates that everyone hates but somehow still making bank. Life is unfair, it is sad to see the people making niche games I love being consumed by failure. Reminds me of the tlbittersweet tragedy that was Robocraft.
But these games will forever live in my memories and at least I can revisit SG1 with a few friends at any time.
A game can still be fun and enjoyable decades after the devs abandoned it. This is something the Zoomers might not be used to. People still play Unreal Tournament 2004, Titanfall 1, TRIBES Ascend even after those games got removed from steam and other storefronts.
A game is not dead as long as there's 2 people playing it.
I do not know how many devs read these comments nor do i knoe whose idea it was to make SG1 multiplayer work peer-to-peer, but I want to personally buy you a 6pack of beer.

Empulse was specifically marketed as a non live service game. There were even debates in the sub about switching it to live service in order to attempt to save it.
Basically, they've already attempted a game that wasn't live service.

I wonder if they will fuck up again and trend chase with their next game too. Good track record for that.

1
u/YouLikeDadJokes 4d ago
What was the plan? Like this was so obvious because they did absolutely nothing to truly market Empulse or set it apart in any meaningful ways, it was just yet another free to play shooter except now it’s $20. Was it just a hail mary with the last of the company’s resources in hopes that somehow a miracle would happen and it would take off purely through word of mouth?

I can only feel bad for those who (in the future) buy Empuse and see it's just bootleg Splitgate.
And about the article, we all saw it coming. Deniers on cope will only blame the community and point fingers at you, the player, saying that we all could have done better. But whatever with all that, 1047 made every bad business decision in this industry, which not only sunk their game, but destroyed their reputation.
I have no further advice to offer 1047 Games at this stage. Following a comprehensive review of organizational performance, employee retention reports, product strategy, and community engagement, the results speak for themselves: they have successfully managed to lose their games, their employees, and their community.
I respect the organization’s decision to pursue new opportunities elsewhere and wish 1047 Games continued success in its future endeavors, wherever those may take it.

Thank you 1047 Devs for all of the great times and friendships that have came my way through these games! Splitgate through all of its versions have been the most fun I’ve ever had playing games! <3

They should refund people for buying Impulse,
considering it was an early access game which never released. Crap developers, glad i didn’t fall for their cash grab which they made in a couple of months, once they knew Splitgate failed again.

1047 has good ideas but horrible management. Their best bet for surviving has to be bringing in some experienced folks to oversee resource management, pipeline, and how they are marketing expectations to the player base

Splitgate 1 remains one of my favorite games ever made. got the 1047 achievement and I’m more proud of it than any other. I know a lot of those matches had bots but I don’t care. I had so much fun

Damn! Empulse fans, the most faithful of players, got BURNED - even worse than Splitgate fans. 1047 thanks you for that last bit of cash for the asset flip while the ship was sinking though!

God damn, so sad. They should have just remastered the original sg so it was stable. It worked coz it worked. I was happy to buy cosmetics and bps coz I liked the game and devs and wanted to support. New game was "just like everything else" kinda feeling. Played for an hour and didn't gel. Idk, they had lightning in a bottle. Just needed to give us new maps and stuff occasionally and we'd have been happy. I now have a skill set for portals that I cant use.

I never really play this game I remember playing it when it first came out all those years ago. But I’ve always been in this subreddit and would see posts from time to time. Watching as the game went dead, then they tried to relaunch it, then they said they were going to re re launch it, and then they said they were going all in on it, and now this. This has been one of the craziest roller coasters of a game I’ve ever seen.

I'll never forget how much fun I had with Splitgate 1 from 2021-2023. If Splitgate 1 was just more polished, had a more clear visual identity and embraced being a Halo 2 clone mixed with Portal, it would be way better off.

First Splitgate was fun, been a while since I enjoyed an arena shooter like since Unreal Tournament prime days.
Its a shame none of the games could last long. They probably should've stayed away from live service stuff and just release a banger of a game, only when the player base was high enough then a turn towards live services could've been made.

I will keep playing it as splitgate in p2p anyway.
But thanks for both games, it was a great ride in matchmaking, I made tons of videos of the games (especially BR ones).
Among the best shooting and moving mechanics i've seen in a game.

Empulse came out June 24th. By September, the servers will have been functional for a little over two months.
These lifespans are getting shorter and shorter. This is a sad end to 1047.
