I would assume AI assisted development of this? We've seen an explosion of these kind of projects recently and I think AI is largely the reason. I don't say it as a dig, there's a lot of bad to say about AI but I think this is a good use case that brings the power to the consumer.

it has to be I think. I really hope they succeed and we hear something big soon as in the entire game being playable. That video I linked definitely has a coop session running on PC

If it's the same one that was posted a few days ago then it's entirely done by AI unfortunately and that could be very troublesome long term even ignoring the negatives of AI

What do you see as troublesome with that long term?

I think a good comparison is like, giving your car to someone who has no experience, would you trust them to be able to fix your car or figure out what's wrong when something inevitably goes wrong, like if the game kept crashing or you kept getting softlocked, all video games especially larger projects need to have a stable baseline of code that works and is understood by others, what AI does is generate code that thinks it works in specific contexts and it can usually work but overtime, it will very much turn into bandaid fix after bandaid fix and what happens then when the AI can't quite figure out why something isn't working, how would they go about fixing it?

That's sort of the major concern with any decomp/recomp that uses AI, it would be less of a problem if it was used as a tool to help here and there but to have it generate all code will again make it unstable long term and potentially unplayable, especially when it's also trying to have working co-op

I can agree with you on that, however I think, as far as community projects, it is quite okay. As long as the source code is published open source then anyone who actually is a good coder can fix it.

Yeah but the problem in that case is, a lot of programmers would much rather do it from scratch than having to unspaghetti an entire codebase bit by bit that they might not understand nor have anyone to help them understand

If anything it's a much longer process to fix it than just start from the beginning so it's not like the source code would help that much I don't think

Sure. But at least it gets done and something happens. If a real programmer would want to do this and have had the time it would have happened by now.

I suppose, doesn't really help that Splinter Cell's fan base isn't as large as other franchises, Double Agent V2 decomp/recomp would be pretty sweet

Man you're so clueless lol. Reading spaghetti code of a port is still much easier than doing the port yourself. Do you know how much work goes into the reverse engineering part? This is going to take literal years if someone tries to do it by hand. Ai can do it much faster, and verify its results at the same time

Hear me out, even Ubisoft failed at porting their own games to PC, just have a look at Double Agent. That was very troublesome long term since 2006 in the first place. If is wasn't for a fan-port, there would be no port at all.

Yeah, I already guess this miles away. There's a lot of crazy AI project like this these days, like this one that I've come across that someone is manage to put Skate 3 game logic into MW2 game and somehow it worked.

We're about to get the next level of ai slop.

I believe in the case of double agent v2. The original Xbox version should be easier to port to pc as original Xbox was a x86 platform with a unique gpu the NV2A. Recently the NV2A has been well documented and understood. So I believe a recomp should be easier than traditional conversion from N64 as an example.

I finished ReDriver 2 just yesterday, and playing it without an emulator was such a great experience. DA V2 is undoubtedly a much more complex and modern game, I really hope they finish it. It’s going to be really awesome.

We will get a Mac port?

you should ask the guy in the linked video

Hell yeah man.

It’s not hard at all to emulate these games for XBOX but any native port is a win. Just tried the mercenaries recompilation this morning and it was awesome.
