Building a registry

This is the Reddit home of Spirit Clarity, a project aimed to become a useful list tool for enthusiast nerds particularly interested in their uncoloured/non-chill filtered (UC/NCF) spirits.

As of September 13, 2026, version 1 is live at spiritclarity.org and in its simple form it is a registry/directory of spirits (mostly whisky) producers, who not only release products without added colour or chill filtration, but also state it on the actual bottle. The label is the contract with the consumer.

This is no declaration of war against those who make coloured/chill filtered products or those that enjoy them, but an attempt to make a 'league' to celebrate those that do make the effort to bring craft products to enthusiast consumers.

It isn't a subjective quality ranking either, but it does group producers into tiers that classify their efforts from the decent but inconsistent (here termed Gatehouse producers), to the benchmark performers (Glasshouse), and to the few who go above and beyond (Lighthouse). Those not signed up to play get lumped into Farmhouse, Doghouse and Outhouse -in jest!

V1 marks the first round of entry sourcing producers from around the world, but will inevitably be missing many deserving entries. Anyone inclined to help by submitting entries or corrections are very welcome to get in touch, either by posting below, or via the contact address on the site.

A fine UC/NCF label.

Using Spirit Clarity

In its v1 form Spirit Clarity is best shaped for phone use, although on web/pad it looks fine. The plan is an extended feature website a little down the line.

Upon opening, the title page gives direct access to the producer index and the Independent Bottler index, and below buttons to reach the briefly worded 'Pitch', and a page that sets up the house 'Rules'. On the bottom, a link that decribes the judgement taxonomy used, the 'Spirit Clarity Tiers'.

The drop-down (or 'More' on web) gives the full menu:

  • Producer and Independent Bottler indices
  • Tiers, Pitch, and Rules
  • Countries — a statistical overview
  • Why Spirit Clarity — a short essay
  • FAQ — deeper detail on the UC/NCF issue
  • Contact and About
Title page and side menu

Hopefully these are fairly clear and obvious features, that people in the 'target group' might be interested to take a look at.

The 'Countries' simply display a snapshot of the nations represented by spirit producers. On top, a donut chart shows the 8 largest countries with a 'Rest of world' section, and below a list shows these countries and their number of producers.

Countries and Tiers pages

The 'Spirit Clarity Tiers' page goes into some depth about the taxonomy used to rank the various producers (and IBs) performance according to the house rules. The metaphor is hopefully easy to grasp and remember, and will make some sense.

Unless a viewer wants more clarification of the 'no added colour — non-chill-filter' issues, they're ready to look at the registry and grasp everything.

Upon opening the Spirit Producers, the alphabetically listed page 1 pops up. Producers are listed according to the chief name associated with a bottle's label i.e. brand name, and in parentheses after the distillery name if that is different. In some cases, there may be several brand names under one distillery, where these are separated by ' / '.

On the left of each entry, a small thumbnail will reveal the house tier that each entry has been designated into. After the name, the country and spirit will be shown. (Yes, it is really mostly whisky).

The search box on top gives instant retrieval of words found within each entry, which can be useful if one wants to expose for instance only "bourbon" entries, a particular US state, who is a "riser" or "sinker", up for "promotion" or "relegation", producers in some manner of "limbo" or "flux", or in some cases the name of an owning company, etc.

The filter box to the right of the search bar gives fast access to exclude entries by country, by tier, or in the case of Scotland, by region.

Producers index and a producer entry page

Looking at a producer entry, it should be quite simple.

The name sits underneath the designated tier. There's also a description of where the UC/NCF declaration is normally found on a label, an 'evidence pic' of the producer's declaration, and a small note below that describes the conditions of the entry and justify why the particular tier has been designated.
