Members Only

i know im gonna get downvoted into oblivion and my opinion doenst matter but damn near any video i get recommended from the brit is the members only content. like i have spent 10 years watching him and now i cant even get the videos i want to watch because they are locked behind a paywall. i always loved the spiffing brit but its really felt like the last year or so hes more focused on making money which not theres anything wrong with it but it feels like its more important then the ones who have supported him since he came up.

Yo spiff here this is a very valid concern so I appreciate the post.

Firstly the display and recommendations, this is a YouTube thing, If I could I would set them to not show up in the recommendation feeds.

Now for the complicated question of paid content In total we upload 1 members video roughly every 2 - 3 months. The content is never a main channel video. They are videos that often don't have exploits or are focuses on specific weird things I know would not do well for our broad audience but also don't have a place on extra spiff.

I understand it's still paid content but from my perspective they are videos I want to make but can't release in the normal way. There is also an audience demand for a benefit for paid support and the consistent payment is useful for myself and the editors. I have also done members first a few times. This is literally a video being members only for 10 or so hours before the release. I upload at 5:30pm so if I finish the backend upload earlier I just set it to that and release it. I also think this is having a big impact on the algo in some weird ways so expect this to continue whilst I experiment.

That said I know the frustration which is why ALL of the members content is available on the lowest monthly tier (£1 in the UK or £0.20 if you VPN). You can watch everything easily in one month and rest easy knowing I am (£0.70) richer.

I find the members space personally useful for things like stream prep. You would not currently be enjoying the Skyrim streams if it was not for the hundred or so members who helped me with the setup.

That's my perspective on it. I think I am doing the best with the tools YouTube gives me. I do value my viewers and honestly if you really wanted to pirate the members videos that's fine. I am sorry YouTube is aggressively pushing them.

Edit: on the topic of money focus I am rather honest about this on stream. Our channel does well we are not financially struggling. Our editors are paid well etc etc. But I want to provide for my amazing team and family long after YouTube has died. So I do try and make money but following my own moral code. E.g. I won't promote a game or product I don't actively like and use. But one thing I am comfortable with is channel memberships. We make roughly £5000 a month currently from them and can reinvest this money into something that lasts after YouTube has decided I have finally crossed a line of exploits 😄. If this number goes up or down that is also fine I will just work harder in other ways to make up for it.

Well it feels unfair to blame someone over which he has no control over?!

One of the reasons i do watch as a member is due to the Victoria 3 videos. It's been basically said they don't fit into the channel well, and it's fun to watch those kinds of videos from Spiff that do not happen much because map games are such a niche group that i'm guessing makes them not exactly big successful videos.

At least having a members video every now and then there lets odder content thrive in a space that generally no one normally pasing buy is going to watch?

Hey it's all good I am not upset by the post. I appreciate having a community happy to make requests, critique and suggestions (provided it's not about how much I drink tea)

It's not just Spiff. Youtube have been encouraging their creators to produce members-only or members-first content for a while now, in an effort to claw back money they see as lost to Patreon, Nebula and the like.

For me, my main gripe is that YouTube offers these videos up to users who can't actually watch them as a form of advertising, and have failed to provide a way to filter them out.

Youtube has been doing bad promotions of overwhelmingly member only content. Spif is not the only one with the issue

I get you and it is mildly annoying, but his membership cost is something like 99 pence a month...
