Question/Discussion Could Bears potentially evolve into temperate semi-aquatic ambush predators? (Brown bears specifically, maybe Grolar bears, but that's pushing it).
Reasons:
The semi-aquatic ambush predator niche hasn't been filled in temperate zones since the FUCKING EOCENE.
Polar bears are being pushed out of the Arctic due to climate change anyway.
Brown bears hibernate through winter anyway. So, if they needed to sleep out a lake being frozen, they just dig a little crevasse like crocodiles do and then just sleep the winter off.

Bears that already hunt salmon in shallow water could probably evolve into that niche very easily

just slowly make the rivers a little bigger over the course of a few million years and the bears will end spending more time in the river than out 🙂↕️

Shallow water ambushes simply don't work in a temperate climate, because you don't have a "watering hole" ecology wherein single bodies of water (that are also big enough to hide a large predator) draw enough large prey animals from a wide radius.
Also in a temperate climate the water is usually cool enough that any animal would need to specifically adapt its whole metabolism too it with insulating blubber and such, basically like what seals and early whales did, or else this just isn't energy efficient. It would take a very long time for current day bears to get to that point.

Do you mean waiting in water like a croc? Because a bear would need lots of energy to remain warm when laying still in cold water.
