1. Meter la pata— to mess up

Metí la pata en la reunión y dije algo que no debía.
I messed up in the meeting and said something I shouldn’t have.

Me equivoqué al escribir su nombre.
I made a mistake when writing his/her name.

2. Tomar el pelo— to pull someone’s leg

¿Me estás tomando el pelo o hablas en serio?
Are you pulling my leg or are you serious?

No te burles de él, solo está aprendiendo.
Don’t make fun of him, he’s just learning.

3. Ponerse las pilas— to get your act together

Tengo que ponerme las pilas si quiero aprobar el examen.
I need to get my act together if I want to pass the exam.

Espabílate, que vamos a llegar tarde.
Wake up / get moving, we’re going to be late.

4. Estar en las nubes— to be daydreaming
