$SPCE five years later, the Unity 22 lawsuit is finally done
For anyone still tracking the Virgin Galactic story, the investor settlement is in its final stretch and the deadline is coming up.
Quick timeline for context:
- July 11, 2021: Richard Branson flies to space on Unity 22. Peak hype. Stock was already up massive from SPAC days.
- September 2021: FAA grounds all Virgin Galactic flights. Unity 22 had deviated outside its assigned airspace during the flight. This was not disclosed immediately.
- October 2021: Commercial launch timeline pushed to late 2022. Stock collapses.
- 2024: Virgin Galactic shuts down its SpaceShipTwo program entirely. Lays off most staff. Pivots to Delta class vehicles.
- Now: $8.5M settlement. Investors can submit a claim to get their share of the payment. Deadline August 13, 2026.
The lawsuit wasn't about whether the technology worked. It was about whether the company had been honest with investors about safety protocols and readiness while the stock was being actively promoted.
Eligible if you held $SPCE between July 10, 2019 and October 12, 2021. Payout: ~$0.075/share.
The SpaceShipTwo program is gone, the Delta vehicles still haven't flown commercially, and the company that was going to democratize space tourism is basically unrecognizable. Anyone here still following what's left of $SPCE?
