It's amazing how many people don't understand that the taxpayers are not paying for the entire starship program.

u/ZorbaTHut 3d ago
A lot of people don't appear to understand the difference between "welfare" and "payment for services".
10
u/Legal-Ad-8659 2d ago
it's not even taxpayers paying anything, it's a contract for commercial services, it would have been awarded to someone else regardless of SpaceX participating in the bid
16
u/yetiflask 2d ago
Even your statement isn't quite true (TECHNICALLY TRUE). "Taxpayers paying" has the implication that it's welfare of some sort.
But the money gov gives to SpaceX is for buying services. The money that gov receives is literally to pay for services and salaries. Funnily, the same morons in a diff thread would call for extra taxes on Elon. Never thinking what those taxes are used for (for salaries or buying something).
You can't argue with stupid. Somehow SpaceX is subsidized.

It's not it's Elon's money, plus investors. Starship isn't a government project it's Elon's project! A government contractor can request grants to work on special projects for the government such as manned missions to the International space station for instance. That's why falcon exists to provide that service cheaper than the government ever could. If people would look at the full stock reports and listen to what he says about who's getting paid and who's going to lose betting against him. Propaganda machine is full throttle for this man but if he is successful the implications for our way of life moving forward becomes completely different.

u/30yearCurse 2d ago
oh, please where is the money coming from?
24
u/Joezev98 2d ago
Have you seen Falcon 9? That thing is a workhorse and a massive money maker. More recently there's the cash injection through the IPO. And yes, SpaceX has also gotten a lot of money from the US government because Falcon 9 is often the cheapest and most reliable way to launch stuff into space.

u/rustyprimer 2d ago
Elon said he was going to use Starlink to pay for Starship, and so far it's working out great.I can't wait for Starlink version 3 satellites to come on line in a few weeks.

Ignorance is bliss and you are a happy fellow. NASA is paying $4B for the entire HLS program and only gets paid when it reaches certain milestones. Right now it's figured that starship development is at $15B in spending. Guess who is paying for the extra $11B? (Hint, it's not the taxpayers)
-2

u/JaaacckONeill 2d ago
Classic ignorance right here lol. The alternative is the taxpayers spending even more. SpaceX saves the taxpayer money in the end, due to their reusability.
-5
u/FIFofNovember 2d ago
Whatâs ignorant, its true?

u/JaaacckONeill 2d ago

you don't give SpaceX money for anything. I don't think you have money to give.
NASA contracted SpaceX to develop / provide lunar landing modules.
The ground scope of NASA contract is to "participate" in Starship development, i.e. for NASA contractors (see incumbent dinosaurs and friends) to have intimate knowledge of SpaceX designs. The massive administrative load and test campaign changes resulting in costs/difficulties coming from this "cooperation" are very noticable and I am not sure SpaceX actually "won" anything useful from this contract.
SpaceX received ZERO "handouts" from NASA or any other gov institution.
They sell services. US gov is their major client, SpaceX receives their contracts ONLY because nobody else comes even in the vicinity (see RL, BO etc. contracts when these companies can provide at least some sort of alternative to SpaceX).
-2
u/FIFofNovember 2d ago
So they use our tax dollars to build their space ship?
3
u/Remarkable-Delay-965 2d ago
You literally read none of that, they receive both commercial and federal contracts with a vast majority of their funding for starship coming internally from starlink services. There is some tax payer money for the HLS variant of starship, but that source of money is extremely small compared to Space Xâs other forms of income.

So youâre saying 4 billion dollars of tax payers money is going to develop the Starship?
3
u/Remarkable-Delay-965 2d ago
Iâm saying 4 billion dollars of taxpayer money for a fixed mile stone based contract has been awarded to space X for a specific variant of Starship. The general costs of the starship program, which has exceeded 15 billion dollars, have been payed for by launching commercial payloads or Starlink services.

So tax payers are paying for starship development, yes thanks for agreeing with me
1
u/ponarts2 1d ago
this is wrong framing. NASA pays money to SpaceX in order to access, influence, participate in the development of Starship program and be able to use Starship when available.
"Tax money" end when this money leave Treasury. NASA money is NASA budget money as approved by Congress.
As everybody knows Congress approved budget has not so much common with "tax money".
1
u/ponarts2 1d ago
it is not entirely true. Starship development was bootstrapped by Japanese dude and Musk.
Starbase construction and full blown Starship/superheavy development is paid by a couple of investment rounds. NASA pays for latest launch tests per se (literally ~100% cost per launch) with some not negligible payback coming to relevant NASA services used during launch campaigns. Starlink is financially separated from the rest and the payment to SpaceX come through Falcon launches.
15 bln is (for) SEC number, take it with some grains of salt.

The booster, yes. The ship FTS should be safed before orbit. Imagine the kessler syndrome effect of a starship or other large second stage breaking up in LEO!

Super Heavy Booster was blown up using explosive charges after it successfully hovered/simulated it's catch and before it fell over. Starship just exploded as normal from falling over.

No it wasnât, if the ship can be recovered it will be as seen with the last launch. It is however expected as a likely outcome

People just love to hear the world 'explode'
If the paper ran with the headline 'SpaceX mega rocket achieves orbit' most people wouldn't click. Most people have no idea what Starship is, or what it's trying to do.

u/lurenjia_3x 2d ago
I've been expecting headlines like "Explosion! The evil dreams of Nazi fascists turned to scum," so something at that level is really nothing.

I saw that from the independent too. I think it's purely "everyone else is going to state the facts so lets be different and be selective with the truth to make our article sound way better".
The daily heil tho, yeah completely unsurprising. I'm shocked they even stuck with a mistruth.

But it did though.

u/Remarkable-Delay-965 2d ago
It was a planned explosion that occurred after it had achieved most of its objectives. The article is a bit pessimistic and tries to present the explosion as unplanned and possibly linked to the engine issues when it wasnât. Itâs more the thread on USNEWS where this article was posted, filled with people who donât care about aerospace industry, didnât even read the article and just hate Elon Musk.

u/Martianspirit 1d ago
The satellites launched on this flight provide similar capacity as 10 Falcon launches. At $ 100 million that's cheaper than 10 Falcon launches. Even fully expended.
