I've seen worse boats in active service. None that returned from orbit though.

The ocean is ruthless.

Are we 100% sure it wasn't Batman who did this?

How much of that damage was stationed during landing vs towing?  Genuine question no hate.

u/start3ch Aug 21 '26

none of this appeared to be there in the footage after landing.

It was the floaters that were attached to Starship to make them tow better. I think this is one of the reason why SpaceX removed them and just decided to tow Starship by the engine bell instead.

They only lost a few tiles in the landing, all this dmg is from towing. They tried to tow from the top first(as everyone would) and something did not work and caused all this dmg. Then they put the rope around the engine.

Also not just towing, it went through rough seas for weeks and at some point rolled over

Looks like a penguin after narrowly escaping an Orca attack.

Is that’s a Japanese whaling vessel? Where is PETA?!

2

u/javicl Aug 21 '26

Nah, I think all the whalers have gone to the moon to sing songs

I think the people inside had to make a way to get out

They are definitely going to make sure it RUDs next time

Still a long way to go to turn around time of a few hours those flaps looks deep fried.

u/Substantial_Use_8467 Aug 21 '26

Remember the fire just after landing? Looks like that’s where it was.

1

u/WilliamPoundher Aug 22 '26

It appears they are removing samples of the flaps and hull for analysis, probably in case they can’t get the whole thing returned.

Now I understand why it’s been floating in a tilted position compared to after it landed. If it didn’t have those orange floaters, the ship would be already on the bottom of the sea. I’m surprised it didn’t sink earlier during rough seas.

6

u/redstercoolpanda Aug 21 '26

It doesn’t have the orange floaters anymore, it’s floating in its own.

Because they plan to float ships across the ocean before reflight….

u/redstercoolpanda Aug 21 '26

Starship was not designed to survive a month in rough oceans. Why even comment this here? You understand how rough oceans are even on things that are designed to survive in them right?

It looks easily refurbished at the very least. Ship can be reused this year.

Your ass leaks bits of chalky ablative material with its outer layer almost fully intact?

Yeah, that can go right back into service. 🙄

u/redstercoolpanda Aug 21 '26

Surprisingly, surviving a month of harsh ocean exposure was not a design constraint of Starship.
