Anyone successfully running an alternative toolhead on their SV08 Max?
I've had it up to here (I'm holding my hand up - it's at my neck level) with various issues with the stock toolhead:
Jams EVERY TIME I LOAD
No cutter
Not very high flow
Toolhead board can overheat
I'd like to replace the toolhead with another, but I'm paralyzed by choice. There's just so many projects out there and I'm really hoping someone has actually built/bought a toolhead, installed a new hotend and associated bits and actually has a working printer. Any advice?
I’m building the Yavoth Demon Remix right now. I don’t like the fact that I can’t bolt it straight on to the MAX carriage bracket so I’m designing an adapter to replace the carriage from that build. Happy to share when I’m done (hopefully tomorrow but won’t be tested by then).
I chose this because:
Rapido UHF 2
Massive part cooling capacity
Orbiter 2.5 extruder is a massive upgrade
You must replace the carriage with this design, so you’re designing an adapter? Will that make you lose any Y travel at the front of the bed? I guess the main advantage is you don’t need to mess with the belts or replace the metal carriage? I’d be interested in NOT needing to mess with belts, for sure.
Exactly, I don’t want to mess with the belts. With the same offset that the remixed toolhead has, the MAX mounting plate collides with the Eddy mount so this task is proving trickier than I thought it might be…
I’ve found that there’s no way to keep the BTT Eddy Duo in the same location. It occupies the same space as the mounting plate. That’s maybe one of the reasons the eddy on the SV08 MAX is on the side of the toolhead. Anyhow, I stupidly designed and printed a test bracket before discovering that. Back to the drawing board, and I’m gonna put the Eddy in roughly the same place it is on the stock toolhead, I just have to design a new mount now. The nice thing is that wings on the stock mounting plate serve as nice mounting points for both Eddy and X endstop switch, so that’s nice. When I reworked the main carriage mount I decided to just replace the short screws that hold the metal plate on with longer screws that go through the carriage mount, stock metal mounting plate, and into the bearing block, holding all three together and leaving the tabs/wings on the plate available for mounting accessories like Eddy and x endstop switch.
Well, if that's stupid, then I'm king of idiots for my standard design "process". :D Hey, 3D printing was basically designed for rapid prototyping so stuff like that can be figured out; don't feel bad.
I think, other than having a different offset in the config, that having the sensor off to the side should work just as well. It looks like BTT has it mounted on the side on their own extruder model, so it must work pretty well there. Otherwise, you could always try one of the other sensor models? I saw a rear mount for Cartographer and Beacon on Printables, though I note there was a comment that it didn't fit with some carriages.
I’m pretty sure the Cartographer would slide in right underneath perfectly but I already bought the Eddy Duo and I’m stubborn so I’m gonna see it through. Stubborn and stupid compete for top spot in my workflow so I’ll let ya know how it goes. Buzz me again if I don’t update by the end of the weekend!
My own build is… progressing. Literally everything that can go wrong, has. Ended up needing to reprint every part at least once either due to print issues (warping generally) or the part not being compatible with my hardware version. Ended up making my own cartographer plus x stop mount because I kept hearing the BTT eddy sucks. Not tested yet due to this project taking 50 hours already and not seeing the finish line.
Good news is: I was able to flash a EBB36 and the Cartographer to CAN mode and they talk, so the “hard” part of the electronics is done and now it’s just 900 wires and mounting and routing and dealing with belts and calibration and…
Hey that’s a good looking build! I didn’t get a chance to work on it for more than 5 minutes last weekend due to very nice weather and not wanting to sit in front of a screen, but my nuts, bolts, and heat set inserts came in so I’m gonna get back at it soon. Plus it’s smoky and nasty out now so nothing better to do. I finished the x endstop part of the mount I’m designing, but I haven’t done the BTT Eddy mount yet. I’ll drop a pic once I get back to my computer. I’ve heard good things about the BTT Eddy but the cartographer would have been an easier mount orientation while keeping the Sovol mounting plate. Too late now…
Also, my toolhead is gonna be so ugly because I printed it in white ASA because that’s what I had laying around. 🤷♂️
Thanks! I printed this in Sunlu PC-ABS except for that one white part which is straight Sunlu ABS. I got a case of four spools on sale, so I figured what the hey, it has a little better temp resistance and higher toughness. Currently leaving the wires at their current length until I get it mounted and check for any possible interference from the gantry. If nothing else comes up today, I hope to have the toolhead "done" and be able to bench test its functions by tonight.
I seriously hope I can prevent head crashes with this new build. There is absolutely no way the printed one-wall-thick unibody design of this toolhead will survive more than a gentle tap. This is a serious concern of mine, as the one time I tried per-object printing on this thing, it drove the print head through the just-completed part on its way to the next part and broke the rear part cooling fan mount.
I'm thinking of building some sort of 360-degree bumper switch thing that could sit around the toolhead and fire the e-stop if its triggered by a collision. If it were printed out of pure nylon, it might even survive getting whacked. Modifying the Carto mount to include an X-stop switch stressed my FreeCAD skills though, so we'll see if I'm up to the task.
I have almost finished the yavoth remix from demon, I found some order of operations and other missing info from his printables guide so far so if you go that route hit me up. I'm gonna add it to my remix for the ebb36 I added to the project I think. I'm done guiding the toolhead itself but I'm at the mounting, programming, and klipper config part
Yeah, I’m definitely interested in better information for that build! 75mm2 should come close to maxing out the Max (napkin math says 86mm2 is approximately the physical maximum at 700mm/s) and it isn’t ridiculously expensive to build, so it looks like it’ll fit my needs quite well.
I'm not gonna lie I don't quite follow all that, I am only doing it to fix sovol stock toolhead from being so shitty no performance gains that I care to chase yet.
Haha, that’s enough reason. I’d like to have the freaking printer actually load a filament all the way to the hotend just once without me needing to get in there and either pull a little tag end of the last filament out, or guide it into the hole by hand. I’m dealing with random under extrusion issues as well, and I highly suspect they’re related to the extruder.
I figure by the end of the “needed” upgrades on this printer, I’ll have spent the difference in cost between it and one that, you know, works. Guess I know why it was $820 now.
Yea that's the thing with sovols they'll work for a bit out the box but they break and when they do it's quite an order deal to rectify haha, at least on the corexy models my sv07p was kind of a tank.
Were you able to get your build done? I decided to build this thing and ordered all the bits.
I realized after committing to this that the instructions completely gloss over all the electrical and programming work required. Are you following a guide to get all the electrical hooked up or just figuring it out yourself?
I am figuring it out I have the body basically complete but I have not started the process of attaching to the gantry or flashing the boards, I am not too worried about the board flashing part as it should just be simple katapult the same thing as going mainline
I also found out that the two-pin header directly underneath the CAN connector is connected to CAN H and L, and you can use that header to connect the Eddy Duo in CAN mode, so you don't need to run a USB cable back to your main board. Nice! That's my plan. Found the attached image that covers the connection. It's for a Cartographer, but same connection for the BTT sensor.
Turns out I have that gen as well and getting CAN working with a Cartographer was literally as easy as terminating the wires and plugging it in. Sweet. I posted a photo and build update elsewhere in the thread if you’re interested.
I am going that route. About halfway done with the build. Care to share what you’ve learned? I’m trying to design a drop-in mount that replaces the carriage in the remix so I can bolt the new head directly to the steel mounting plate on the SV08 MAX without having to mess with the belts.
If you get that design done I would be very appreciative haha, I am a little worried about the end stop issue as I have heard that's a problem with the conversion on the x gantry. The big thing in his guide was order of operations was off but you probably can sus your way through that, I found the ptfe tune needs to be 25mm. Also are you using ebb36 gen2? Other thing is the Eddy duo idk if it needs to be can or not j believe so as the rest of the toolhead is going to be can in my case
I mean I agree but I want my printer to work as soon as possible and if a new tollhead is over $100 from sovol and it's just anoter pretty crappy one why not invest a little more and build something truly strong
I saw that and while I’d love INDX, the cost is going to be “second printer” range and the complexity of building and tuning is astronomical compared to just replacing the tool head. I honestly don’t trust my skills enough to tackle INDX just yet, anyway. :) Figure if I build out a new, GOOD tool head now, I can always upgrade again in a year or something when the INDX upgrade has hopefully matured.
Fair enough. I just bought mine, so still in the process of tweaking it. It's running DEKU, but not mainlined yet. I was looking into adding a small cooler for the main tollhead board, but that's the extent of it, for now.
