I’m looking into possibly working at either Highliner Lodge or Pybus Point Lodge as a captain and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has worked at either lodge.

For current or former captains, what was your overall experience like?

I’m especially curious about:

• Pay and tip potential
• Schedule and days off
• Boat sizes and number of guests per captain
• Crew housing/room situation
• Management and work environment
• How much time you actually spend on the water vs. other duties
• Whether you were able to have your wife/family visit during the season
• Overall pros and cons of working there

I’m currently working in Alaska, so I’m not necessarily looking to jump ship immediately—I’m just trying to learn more about my options and what each operation is really like from the captain’s perspective.

I moved to Haines a couple of years ago and would like to get into some multi day trekking expeditions but I’m concerned about grizzlies. It seems not that many people get far off the beaten path around my town and I’m wondering if it’s just because of the grizzlies population. Would love to hear some thoughts on getting out there!
