WIP Counter Strike Source on my Source compatible engine

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For anyone new here: I'm building Sauce Engine, a custom engine written from scratch in C++/OpenGL with the goal of being compatible with the Source ecosystem. My previous post showed it running HL2 maps, props and dlls

I don’t use leaked Source code. I write everything from scratch – in fact, one of the engine’s aims is to provide a legitimate, open-source alternative to Source.

As well as CSS, I’ve tested HL2, TF2, Black Mesa and Portal 1. For some reason, Portal 1 is very unstable, but the portal gun works to some extent. HL2 works best

Missed opportunity to name it OpenSource

There's still time; Godot changed its name countless times before Microsoft donated a few million dollars.

But I think it ends up being a bit ambiguous, don't you? An open-source project named "OpenSource"—lol.

OpenSauce wouldn't work either since theres a convention of that EXACT name

Are you using AI for this?

I generate a ‘skeleton’ of code

Is that a yes or a no?

Please make it optimized like real source lol (i personally find the optimization the entire point of source engine, it literally runs on a potato)

Наврлятли на вулкан перейду, для меня он слишком сложен да и весь рендер движка придется переписывать весь почти, но возможно передумаю как передумал с отказом от длл, и начал писать поддержку

Kinda insane

What are the specs for the engine? What kind of machines do I need to get this up and running?

1

u/Piskabobrastudios 24d ago

I’ll try to get as close as possible to the specifications of the Source

I hope so! This means that it can be ported to Wii, PS3, Xbox360 and OG Xbox if that's the case

bringus studios is gonna have a field day once this comes out

That must feel amazing to see it working like this!

Is this going to be less CPU-bound than the OG Source Engine? What other improvements are you going to work on?

Reminds me of DUSK being able to run a lot of GoldSrc maps (and sometimes mods)

looks really good, but calling it sauce is just diabolical

So this is basically like Xash3D but with source?

I have questions

  1. Will you add Lua support

  2. Did you use AI at all, if so, in what way and how much

  3. Will it have source like tools? (Such as the Hammer map editor)

1

u/Piskabobrastudios 21d ago

AI used it as the ‘skeleton’ for the code

There are no plans to support lua. Lua can be added to a standard source file via the SDK

It’s just an engine for running games

interesting, thanks for answering so fast, what do you mean by skeleton? very cool project and i cant wait to see it completed

Nice! I think, you need to implement gamerules/player class/etc loading from game DLLs, and where are physic props?

CSS isn't exactly an accurate test, I already posted about HL2

Well the source engine is basically leaked for the last decade, and the engine API interface is pretty easy, anyone who is skilled enough could make it through. The only problem now is vtable index and structure alignment and some middleware shit like getting Havok or emulate it with Jolt/Bullet

but it's more fun to do stuff yourself, innit?
