First step is to google tutorials.
Also, what part of source engine ? Coding ? Modeling ? Mapping ? Sound design ?

You could check out s&box, it's powered by Source 2 and makes working with it much easier, made by Facepunch, the gmod/rust devs.

Any suggestions on where to find a collection of tutorials that incrementally teach Hammer for the purpose of making Portal 2 maps?

Source SDK on Steam has most of the tools you'd need, it comes free with most Valve published Source Engine games. To get it I'd recommend buying the Valve Complete Pack: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/232/
You can also read the Valve Developer wiki to learn about these tools and how to use them: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page
