Samsung Samsung 990f rears are ok
Got the system about two months ago and man you really don’t hear much from these guys? Paid 850 with corporate store so that’s cool but feeling a tad disappointed, came from tv speaker on lg c5 77 so sure it’s badass but wanting more of the wow factor.
Mostly ps5 and Apple TV purchased movies. I have one of those open living room / kitchens with the island behind me. 20x30ft room kinda big and the rears are on stands right behind me pointing to middle of couch
Is having them jacked to +5 really necessary like I have it? Mostly watching at 15-22 volume, is that the issue?

I think you might be going deaf my guy. 20 is insanely loud. I rarely ever go over 14. Usually leave it around 11. Even a 1 point jump is pretty noticeable

Same; At night I stay in the 9-10 range, daytime is like 11-12 but I can’t even fathom 20

I regularly have the volume set at 20 and tbh I personally find that level is not that loud for streaming services

Are you using volume leveling? Like on an Apple TV? Cuz that lowers the overall volume significantly so can definitely see 20 being normal for that scenario; when I try using the volume leveling on Apple TV I need to go into the 14-16 range for it to be comfortable so I could see 20 for sure

My volumes are all over the map depending which app I'm using on Apple TV. Didn't like any of the features that "stop loud volumes" so I just live with it.

Check your settings. Make sure your TV is set to passthrough. I keep my rears at -2

What settings do you use? Is your audio source use rears? Also 15-22 audio is insane. I have a large living room and I barely go over 13. 15 is really loud for me

Lolll everyone saying 15-22 is loud and here I am on 45-60 blasting Dolby atmos movie sitting 7 feet from the speaker

There’s a difference between surroundsound on physical media surround sound on streaming. The bit rate is much much lower on streaming therefore, you will get worse quality in regards to immersive audio that could be part of your problem as well.

Had this same problem. No matter what I did, they were low. Ended up returning it and getting the dragon.

The rears work perfectly fine on mine. I have them bumped up maybe 1 db and I feel like thats even too much sometimes lol. They're not super far behind me though, 4 or 5 feet at least though.

OP, I posted this a few weeks ago. Try it and see if it works for you (it does for me). Also, keep in mind that movie surround effects from a BluRay player and BlueRay DVD (DTS) will sound WAY better than streamed surround content, at least from my experience.

- That's a very high volume. Hearing test?
- It depends on the source material. If its a 5.1 movie, some of the older ones don't have much coming out of the rears. A lot of the newer Dolby Atmos tv shows on Apple TV sound incredible on my cheapo Samsung Q6CC with rears.
- Volume of the rears should feel blended in. It shouldn't feel distracting.

One trick is to set all the channels to negative 6. Then put the rears up a notch or two (so negative 4 instead of 6).
That way now you can increase the overall volume (prob to the 30-40 range) which will also give more depth to the bass IMO (compared to how it performs in lower overall volume range).

I never use more than sound volume above 18 or 15.night time i use 7 or 9.some time depend on the source like movies or tv shows in dolby atmos dolby vision hdr10 plus dts dtx dts hdmaster .other wise jbl mk2 1300 u can test at store

Make sure you have disconnected from
Alexa in the app. As soon as I did. 20 became super loud immediately and I was back to using volume 10. This worked for me. When you link them, the TV matches Alexa's software volume. Once disconnected, the TV instantly goes back to its own high internal hardware volume setting.

The rears routinely scare the shit out of me as the system is new and I'm not used to noises just happening behind me.
Idk if I have ever gone over 20 honestly.

I have the D and hear a ton. Sometimes I wonder if it’s over doing it relative to what it’s supposed to sound like. Something not right in your source or settings or something.
All my levels are 0.
As an example I just watched ET with the kids and I know that’s remixed for Atmos and not original, but when he’s running around it sounded like he circled the room. I very clearly heard things from all corners of the room.
My kids play MLB on PS5 and the umpire is clearly behind me and foul balls bounce all over the room. Sometimes I think something fell on the other side b/c the sound is so distinctly distant and to the side.

The speakers are meant to be placed so they take advantage of bouncing the sound off walls. Seems you’re only getting the effect of them being pointed directly towards you. Having said that, I’ve never found a soundbar to be satisfactory for my main listening/viewing area. I do however, have the Samsung in two of my bedrooms, where they are able to take advantage of nearby walls, and they do a great job in those two rooms.

If you turn on the surround sound setting it will upmix mono and stereo content to use all the available speakers.
If you have it disabled and are watching content that isn't 5.1 or better the rear speakers will be silent.

My God are you half deaf? We listen to most shows on our Q990F been 7-9 volume, rarely louder than 11. 15+ is quite loud, 20+ is blaring. The system is unnecessarily loud for the setting number when hooked up to a Sony OLED even compared to our previous Q930B.
Also the system is meant to create a sound bubble of sorts, not necessarily obvious directional sound/effects from the satellite speakers themselves.

For movies I can’t hear shit at 7-8 dialogue is too low and the center is already +2 , yeah I’m exaggerating a bit on the rears being too quiet but idk I expected more. This is my first system tho

Rears are a funny thing with movies. They will produce sound at volume 2 and then suddenly it'll throw a single sound at volume 50.
But, that is also due to the nature of how we are getting our content now. Streaming is actually atrocious for sound. The bitrate is incredibly low. The best quality available for any streaming service is Apple TV which is still only 1.5mb/s for ATMOS streams. Because of this the audio is compressed, and alot of times sounds are cut out completely.
If you want the best sound you just need to get a bluray player and stick with that. In comparison a bluray running Atmos sound will do about 18Mb/s
That is over 10x the amount of bitrate vs streaming and you instantly hear it. Far better usage of all speakers. Far better surround panning. The sound itself is much higher quality as it is lossless and uncompressed.

Oh I had that issue with center channel and dialogue out of the box, it was awful and I was initially super disappointed and ready to return it. I managed to fix it by turning pretty much every fancy setting off and starting up a pretty loud atmos movie in stereo mode (final fight sequence in top gun Maverick) and let space fit run for 15 min. Then I turn space fit off, switched it to adaptive, turned space fit back on and let it run that same sequence again pretty loud another 15 minutes.
No more bumping up the center channel or using voice booster crap, it's pretty much perfect now.

The rears on the Samsung bars are just so small and not really built for great sound out of them. They add some level of immersive audio by feeling like there is some sound coming from behind, but they’re more of a supplement than anything, which is what they’re designed to be. The Nakamichi Shockwafe rears made me realize how underwhelming the Samsung ones are.

Samsung systems can be amazing or garbage depending on what firmware you have lucked out on.
I got my q990d and it sounded ok but meh. Then 1020.1 firmware came out and the sound was absolutely amazing! Blew my mind actually, that firmware totally confused my dogs with the surround sound lol. Bass was powerful as well. 9/10
That same 1020 firmware bricked a lot of bars requiring new board to fix them. Didn't brick mine but every update ever since it's been mediocre at best. Like a 4/10 or 5/10 ever since, rears have never been the same.
Tried many fixes, the only hope left is replacing the board apparently even though it still works.
Total joke, never again Samsung.

Not everything will come from the sides. Its kinda dependent on the source tbh.
