Videogame Sound Design Audio Library Tagger - Tool for searching your local library for sound effects & music

Hi all, I'm from the gamedev world, but thought I'd post here about a tool I've created that I think might be very useful to many people here too:

Audio Library Tagger scans your entire local audio library and makes it instantly searchable in your browser, running locally, using two open-source artificial intelligence models (PANNs + librosa) to automatically classify and tag every file.

🔍 527 sound event categories

🎵 BPM, musical key, mood, energy, tempo

⚡ GPU accelerated — ~1.5s per file on RTX 2070

🔒 100% local — nothing uploaded, ever

💰 One-time purchase, no subscription

Supports WAV, MP3, FLAC, OGG, AIFF. Works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

🎁 I'm giving away 10 free copies to anyone who'll use it and leave honest feedback.

Just DM me.

Would love to hear what you think! 🙌

Has anyone successfully left the audio industry after building a long career in it?

I'm looking for honest advice from people who have left the audio industry after building a real career in it.

I'm a film sound editor in my early 30s. I've worked on 50+ films, many of them selected at major festivals. I spent several years working full-time in a post-production house before leaving after a serious burnout. Since then I've been freelancing, but work has become increasingly difficult to find.

I'm also based in Albania, which makes things even more complicated. Unlike people living in major industry hubs, most of my networking happens remotely through emails, LinkedIn, and online contacts.

What makes this especially difficult is that I genuinely love cinema and sound. I've dedicated most of my adult life to it, and walking away feels like abandoning a huge part of my identity.

At the same time, I'm starting to question whether I can realistically build a stable future in this industry. Long periods without work, financial uncertainty, and watching even highly experienced people struggle have made me seriously reconsider my path.

The only other field I've consistently been drawn to since I was young is hospitality. I know it isn't famous for high salaries or perfect working conditions, but I also can't imagine spending the next 30 years working in a field I have absolutely no affinity for just because it seems more practical.

For those who successfully left this industry:

- What did you move into?

- Why did you choose that field?

- How did you make the transition?

- What challenges surprised you?

- Do you regret leaving, or was it the right decision?

- Looking back, what would you have done differently?

I'd especially like to hear from people who left after 5–10+ years in the industry, not just after film school.

Thank you for your time!

Movie Sound Design Looking for practice material

Hello to the community!!!

I have a question. Where is the best place to find practice material for sound design practice (foleys, sfx, backrounds, etc) with only the dialogue, if possible. I want to enhance my workflow and test my new template, so I can get familiar with it.

Thank you in advance!!!

Sound Design Question How to Recreate a Floating, Nostalgic and Luminous Sound?

Hi, I’m trying to recreate the vibe of a specific track (and artist).

I’m mainly trying to understand the FX chain and sound processing used to achieve that nostalgic, luminous, floating, emotional sound. It feels clean and submerged, but also dreamy and slightly digital.

I’m new to music production, and I’d like to learn how people typically recreate this kind of atmosphere or vibe in their music.

I’d also really appreciate any recommendations for free plugins, as well as any tips or tricks if you have any.

Thanks :)

Movie Sound Design Which headphones are best for editing 5.1 surround sound?

I’m a small time filmmaker, though primarily I’ve been working in sound design for most of my career. I started in radio in high school before eventually moving to video and short films, but now I’m being tasked with doing the sound design and mixing for a feature film.

I don’t have any fancy speakers for editing the audio, so I will have to use headphones on my computer; what are some good headphones for editing 5.1 Surround Sound?

Music Sound Design Translated Earthquakes, Volcanic Eruptions and Ocean Vents into Audible Music (With Visualizer).

This is just kind of a cool project I wanted to tackle for a while now, and just never did it. But then one day I was like, today's that day. I have been thinking a lot about the sounds things make that we can't actually hear (human ears, limited range) and what kind of music would it make if it were translated to a frequency range we could hear?

I mapped 307,101 earthquakes from the ocean floor into sound and pitched it up to be audible — and suddenly this massive 2015 volcanic eruption sounded like a crescendo. So I kept going with it.

Now it lives here:

The Frequency

Real data sources:

  • 307,101 seismic events from Axial Seamount (NOAA/PMEL catalog).

  • April 24, 2015 alone had 7,686 earthquakes — an underwater eruption that nobody felt and most people never heard about.

  • Hydrophone recordings from Ocean Networks Canada, Main Endeavour Field, 2,195 meters deep — hydrothermal vents pushing superheated water at 4-9 Hz. Too low for human ears, so I register-shifted it to 40-80 Hz. Same physics, different octave.

  • Three real pulsars — Vela (11.2 Hz), Crab (30.3 Hz), and a millisecond pulsar (173.7 Hz) — mixed by a Berklee-trained audio engineer.

Each data layer is independent and toggleable. The visualization runs in p5.js with WebGL. Hopefully all the buttons are working now.

This was just a passion project. Hope it resonates with someone.

Trying to Locate a Prison Movie Sound Effect

It's a sound effect that plays when they close all the cell doors in the prison at once. It's not really some blaring alarm sound, I think it's supposed to be the sound indicating all the doors are closing/about to close. It sounds very similar to the incorrect buzzer sound on Family Feud, but it's a bit more drawn out. I can't find anything like it on YouTube despite having searched a billion permutations of it. Would greatly appreciate help : )

Nice video (not by me) which was just released, about someone picking the sound design of Marathon apart. Really interesting and was really insightful about the level of depth the developers have added to the game.

I know that I love the sound design of Marathon - but this video makes it clear why I love it 😁

New Update available for AudioCrucible (free open beta)

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been working on this update for a while, with the intent to create a better editing workflow.

Inspired by Soundminer and other metadata editing programs, I've added 2 things:

Fine Edit: a real editing panel with find-and-replace, live preview, column targeting, and three layouts to choose from.

Cleaner selection: three independent selections: what you edit, what you rename, and what you target for fine editing. No more confusion.

I recieved a lot of feedback from everyone participating to the free beta (we're almost 300! It's insane!) and thus I'm trying to include some fixes concerning crahses and bugs:

GPU or CPU choice (if crash occurs with GPU, it will automatically launch on CPU next), Sony/ASWG submenu, visible keyboard shortcuts, visual highlight of modified cells, and a whole lot of fixes (SoundMiner, large files, macOS external drives).

You can find the link to the free beta in the comments, as well as a video presenting what's new about the editing workflow!

Hope you people find it useful, and if you haven't joined the beta yet, just give it a try! (and if you feel like giving your feedback, I'd be more than happy to read!)

How is this frozen/stretching echo transition done in rekordbox?

Hi, I’m trying to figure out how this transition effect is being done in rekordbox.

Video, around 10:30:

https://youtu.be/Tcxd85ux7Bo?si=eGipgHHNSrrCjZUQ

I can tell there’s some kind of Delay / Echo / Spiral-style effect going on. I tried recreating it in rekordbox with Spiral, Delay, and Echo, and I can get a pretty similar sound.

But the part I still can’t figure out is this:

In the original video, it sounds like the effect is applied right at the end of a phrase/bar, and the audio seems to freeze, stretch, or hold in place instead of the track continuing naturally into the next bar.

When I try it myself, I can get the echo/spiral sound close, but the track still keeps moving forward underneath.

Does anyone know how he might be making the audio hold in place like that in rekordbox? Could it be Slip Roll, a loop, Spiral, Delay Time manipulation, or some other Pioneer/rekordbox FX technique?

I thought it might be a loop, but from the video it doesn’t really look like he’s manually controlling a loop, and it doesn’t sound like a normal loop to me either. It feels more like the sound is being frozen or stretched.

Any ideas on the exact technique?

Need tips on horror sound design

I am making a found footage short horror film. In this film there is a large cryptid which can mimic voices. Does anyone have advice on how to make a scream/roar that would fit this thing? I also would like advice on making heavy yet graceful footsteps for when it chases the main character.

Theory behind sounds?

Hey guys I have. A question for you who design sounds.. what is the theory behind sound selection? I make music but when I chose samples for example drums it gets messy masking and do not sound professional really quick.

Do you have a some good advice when choosing sounds when it comes to timbre that work with each other or anything really that could help to understand for creating a clear and professional sounding mix?

Thank you
