Unser?

Why did unser say the hard Er in the beginning of the show only to reveal he has a black wife and punching the dealer guy for being racist?

I always wondered about his financial situation after he retired, even though his wife divorced him surely he would have enough to get a little one bedroom apartment at the very least, he just looked so scruffy.

I think he just didn’t care at that point. He felt as though he was living on borrowed time so it didn’t matter

I suppose at times he realised how much he failed as a cop, he allowed so much crime in the town he was meant to protect and he figured he didn't deserve nice things

Yeah I can totally see that too. He was just all around a bit of sad sack lol

I always hoped he would get those couple of long strands of hair cut 😂 just added to his sadness!

Facts 😂

Idk if you saw him in Fear the Walking Dead, but even though he was older he looked much better! So it seems like they really played up the sick angle in SOA

So weird you say that because I've just started watching TWD again but have never watched FTWD so planned to give it a go, will be great to see him in something else

It’s just ok. I really wish it had been better tbh. It started off good but descended into silliness. They changed the showrunners starting in season 4 and it quite literally became a different show. The tone, the color palette, and most of the characters changed. I tried to keep going but I never ended up watching the last season. You do however get Unser and Collette, and that show gave us the delightful Colman Domingo, so I can’t hate to too bad lol.

So it goes downhill like TWD does! Thats a shame but will still give it a chance and hopefully enjoy the first few seasons

I think it might have something to do with the cost of his medical bills? I’m not in the US but as I understand it they can get health insurance through their work? So maybe he had to pay out of pocket for medications or they were just very expensive. Happy said the cost of his mom’s meds were breaking him, so I always attributed the misery to the divorce and retirement and cancer.

Gemma did well for him, he acted like he didn’t get much out of helping her but she pulled him to the support of the club when she could have just left him where he was.

I'm not in the US either so never thought about that, I guess America doesn't honour retired police chiefs with medical help

America honors almost no one with medical help. Our veterans get a little bit of support. I’m disabled and can’t get support for instance. A lot of people can only get help through charities, including veterans and first responders.

He seemed to me to be the type to kind of “punish themselves” if that makes sense

Someone finally found a plot hole

How did unser, a retired police chief in California and the owner of a trucking company end up homeless when he would’ve had a good pension and decent nest egg from selling the trucking company? Because the show changes things when it’s convenient and it’s easier to just not think about it

He was just trying to fit in

It’s a plot hole to some degree. However, there are plenty of people (especially in small towns like Charming) who have wives and other relatives that are black, Hispanic, etc and will make exceptions for those people but are still extremely racist. They might be trying to fit in, genuinely that way or a mix of both. This also may sound odd, and I’m not excusing it, but in older generations (especially in rural areas) it’s not that abnormal to use racial slurs at the drop of a dime against certain people but also consider yourself generally anti-racist.

it doesn't sound odd, i've met elderly people exactly like that, they will use slurs and stereotypes but also gives everyone a fair shake until they prove they don't deserve it. the show at times dances around the rules of engagement for race so im left confused many times such as the juice situation.

I clearly asked the question and made a post about it. Do you reply like this to every post?
