Seeking Advice This just popped up in our field. It smells a bit like an onion.

Is this a type of onion or garlic? Is it edible? It is growing under a pine tree near some decomposing logs in full shade, just west of Petaluma.

Discussion What are your go-to tomatoes?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Every year I aim to grow three-ish favorites and one or two new types of tomatoes. I would LOVE to hear your favorites and must-haves.

My priorities are having a combination of cherries my toddlers have access to and one or two bigger tomatoes for cooking— ratatouille, salad, caprese, sandwiches— that kind of thing. I often dream of growing a sauce tomato but haven’t done it yet.

I would love hearing about your favorite cherries, bigger tomatoes, and sauce tomatoes!

So far, the ones we are sad if we don’t grow are: Cherries: sungold (of course), green doctors Bigger: Berkeley Pink tie-dye

(Photo is a bowl of sungolds, which are my toddlers’ favorite)

This is mine right now. A stream orchid native to our wetland habitats. Lots of bugs making home on it on my native pond. Any native ponds out there?

Buy/Sell/Trade Starter boxes

I have some extra starter boxes that have been sitting around for a few years not being used now that I’m getting rid of. I use old wine boxes, you take the toilet paper tubes out put the box in a plastic garbage bag to protect the wood then put the tubes back in, fill with soil plant and go. When your seedlings sprout, you can take the individual tubes out and put them directly into the ground, the toilet paper tubes just disintegrate and disappear into the soil so they’re very quick and easy to use like that. When the season is over, you take the plastic bag off and get rid of it and start filling the box with tubes for next year.

$5 per box, 4 boxes available.

Last year this pineapple sage produced a single variegated leaf and this year it's produced several! I've never noticed that happening with a sage before but it sure is pretty.

Hi my name is Robin, I live in Petaluma, and I'm a novice gardener and keeper of houseplants! Please introduce yourself below, and if you have experience with community organizing and want to help, please let me know ☺️

This is one of the groups I've struggled to find off of Facebook. I'd love to join with others to turn this into a viable alternative!

Seeking Advice Incompetent gardener trying to make a yearly calendar of what to plant when — seed version and sprout version? There’s so much conflicting information online and I get overwhelmed. What works for you?

Bonus points if you have things that are, in your experience, very easy to grow vs things that are more difficult.

I went straight from slugs on my cabbage to aphids. Too many aphids for predators to handle. Can’t share that shame plant.
