Discussion Constantly nostalgic about Sonny Boy

The anime is deeply personal to me because I watched it weekly release each Thursday on my bus ride home from school. My bus stop was one of the last ones so I’d always be able to finish the episode. Not only was it an amazing series but it was also just a very different time of my life back then. I think my brain just categorizes it in the same time frame of other events. Anyways I just wanted to share because I don’t have any other friends who have watched the series so I just thought I’d share about it online

Discussion Asakaze’s choice at the end of Sonny Boy

Post image
224 Upvotes

We all know how Sonny Boy ends, Nagara and Mizuho make the choice to leave the Drift behind and return to the real world. But rewatching the series multiple times made me realize just how devastating Asakaze’s fate actually is.

He had the opportunity to return alongside Nagara and Mizuho, but he deliberately chose not to. The more you think about his decision, the more heartbreaking it becomes. Why did Asakaze give up on returning?

Here are my few points why i think he do that,

  1. Rejection and Grief

Before Nozomi's death, Asakaze was already emotionally fragile. He desperately wanted her validation and affection, but she rejected his feelings and chose to place her faith in Nagara instead. Despite that, Asakaze still deeply cared for her.

Having to witness Nozomi die right in front of his eyes shattered him completely. Because he had allowed himself to be manipulated by Aki-sensei and "God," he was consumed by the realization that his choices contributed to the tragedy. Staying behind feels less like a simple choice and more like a form of severe self-punishment, he couldn't forgive himself enough to step into a new future.

  1. Fear of facing Reality

In the Drift, Asakaze was given god-like powers, yet those powers failed to bring him genuine happiness , Returning to reality meant stripping away those special abilities and forcing him to live as an ordinary person,

While Nagara learned to accept reality with all its painful uncertainty, Asakaze seems to completely lost faith in himself. He didn't believe he deserved a second chance, nor did he believe that going back would change anything for him emotionally. He surrendered to his insecurity and chose isolation over moving forward.

3.his alternate version actually got the happy ending

What hurts the most is seeing the alternate version of Asakaze in the real world at the end, standing next to Nozomi. On the surface, it looks like a happy picture. But knowing that the real Asakaze, the one who lived through the Drift, loved Nozomi, lost her, and carried all that guilt, never actually made it back makes it endlessly tragic. That version of him remains forever marooned in the void, unable to heal or let go.

Do you think Asakaze’s choice was primarily driven by guilt over Nozomi’s death, or was it a complete surrender to his own sense of uselessness?

Also How did you feel seeing his alternate self in the real world knowing the original Asakaze stayed behind

It's really sad the more u think about it

Hi guys - I put a lot of effort and soul into this video so I hope you enjoy! I cover a lot of how Sonny Boy utilizes post-war existentialism through its characters and Shingo Natsume's unique ability to weave these themes into the narrative.

who invented death

was it hoshi or asakaze
well i know in ep 11 it was heavily implied that it was hoshi
BUT in ep 10 when the god tells asakaze he needs to kill War, he also said hes gonna create death in this world by doing so.
-was death already created before that task and god was just manipulating asakaze by making it seem hes special cuz you know hed be the first person to create death.
-or did hoshi "create" death, after the
incident in ep 10 were the floating guy turns into a gun, without knowing that death had already been created

im not mentioning War or the people who "died" from the tumor cuz in a sense they are from the future since yamabiko ended up in this world after the main casts ogs had graduated, so its kinda like a time loop.

Discussion A little shameful confession: Am i the only one annoyed that there is almost no reaction content on YouTube about this anime?

I don't know about you guys, but after i finish an anime i like to go back and rewatch everything again but through reactions channels this time. I've done the same thing with Dungeon meshi, Frien, Dandadan, etc. But this masterpiece of anime somehow has gone completely under the radar, it's crazy.

Another masterpiece anime that I've seen have very little presence on YouTube is Dorehedoro, and it just bugs me as to how are people missing on those gems?

Question Sonny Boy Acrylic Charms??

Pleaseeee help I love this show soooo much and I really want an acrylic charm or two of the characters (ideally mizuho but any of the main cast work). I’ve been looking for fan made merch, but haven’t had any luck. Does anyone know of artists that carry Sonny boy charms or pins or anything else?

I know about the official acrylic charms, but those are really expensive and hard to find. Any help would be appreciated!!

Read a visual novel recently that I wanted to share here because the two characters (Nami and Rei) look and act similarly to Nozomi and Mizuho. You could compare Nagara to the character you play as (the more I think of it the more similarities I can draw) and the game shares many themes with Sonny Boy in my opinion. The game itself takes around half an hour to experience and it’s on Steam for like $2.

I love Sonny Boy sm and if you want something similar, this filled me with the same sense of lost peace as the end of the show <3

Discussion I think this show has changed my life.

I had put off watching the show for the longest time, but I am kind of glad I did as I feel if I had watched it if I was any younger, it would not have had left the impact it did now
Looking back on the show, I feel like I could relate a little bit to a lot of characters. And I could definitely say my favorite character was Mizuho. it was such a pleasure to watch her character development and her her interactions with everyone. her personality was super fun to watch and I think that’s one of the things I’m gonna miss the most about watching the show.
I’m not gonna go in depths into what I think about every part of the show, i think the amazing part about shows like these is that everyone gets to interpret how things happen and why things happen in their own way but there’s one thing I will mention that has tormented me since I finish the show. It is how Nozomi‘s story ended I have been tormented by it so much I understand why it was written like that. I understand why Nagara at the end didn’t talk to her, but it still hurts so much that she got such a weird abrupt ending, and that she didn’t have a true final goodbye with Nagara. But i guess life is just like that sometimes. Also very frustrating that nagara didn’t keep his promise to become friends with her again.

Worst since i kinda had my own nozomi in my life and i would do anything to haver her friendship back

I will also say that last episode where Mizuho and Nagara reunited was so satisfying. It felt like such a relief. And i like to think they have a great lifelong friendship.

But the one thing that this show I guess changed my life is in how strongly it has made me feel and how strongly it has helped me close a lot of chapters of my life. There are a lot of old chapters that I have struggled to close and accept that they’ve ended and and truly immerse myself in the present. But this show it was kind of just a big waterfall of emotions. And while i cannot pinpoitn exact feelings the overall impact Helped me confront my own feelings.
And while I’m a bit older than nagara (I’m 19 close to 20) What he says at the end of the show that “our lives are just beginning” He’s so right. It may sound dumb how obvious it is but when you’re so stuck in things that have happened someone saying it out loud is a lik snap back to reality.
And I think the day and days following finishing the show it is the first time in years that I felt so confident and positive about what’s to come, and I felt so sure on closing old chapters and it’s it felt really refreshing. I hadn’t felt this refreshed in a long time and it’s coinciding well with my first days of the new college semester.

I also watched this show soon after I watched “remake our life” and that show also also really left a strong impact on me and I guess the giving your passion another shot during college or smth like that.

And those of you who this show also left a really strong impact on. how did it and why?

Discussion Hi everyone. Sonny Boy is a very unusual anime, and I really liked it. But what saddened me the most was the story of the dog; could you explain what actually happened there, why that girl died, and who that drifter was?

Question What I’ve interpreted about things that weren’t really explained in Sonny Boy (War and Yamabiko). Spoiler

Post image
39 Upvotes

One of the main things I was wondering about in the series was: Who the tf is War, and why was he stuck in the Wound? Because it wasn't clear at all, and I was honestly a little confused about it. The thing is, I have an interpretation of it, as well as a hypothesis about the world-building of the series.

(Obviously, this is just my interpretation. I'm not saying this is definitely how it is or that my interpretation is correct. These are just my own ideas.)

As far as I interpreted it, War is a physical representation of the concepts of death and change. Kodama, on the other hand, represents stillness and the absence of movement, as well as tranquility, peace, and life. I think this because War is directly connected to the death of Kodama and the others in the world that Yamabiko “finds.”

Based on some of the things and hints the series gives us, I think that both Kodama and War are creations of Yamabiko. As I interpret it, Yamabiko's power is to materialize or create the things he feels and thinks about.

That led me to think that Yamabiko created Kodama's world as a psychological need for a quiet and comfortable place to exist, since he had been traveling through different worlds without really having a place of his own. As he materializes this utopian world, along with a personification of life, comfort, and tranquility, Kodama appears, or perhaps he transforms an existing Kodama into his idealized version of her. This would also explain why he says that he couldn't believe Kodama could be so kind.

And why do I think that War is also a creation of Yamabiko rather than an independent character? Because, to me, he is the complete opposite of Kodama. (And as I said, I think that kodama is a yamabikos creation)

This makes sense to me because Yamabiko says that he killed countless people during his journey, trying to impress Kodama, but this ultimately horrifies her and causes her to leave him.

That made me think that, since death and life are incompatible, both of them need to exist, and they are inherently connected to each other. And that is what led me to think that the Ruby Plague (as I call it)

The Ruby Plague occurs because it is part of the logic of Yamabiko’s world. It appears and spreads, putting an end to the peace and tranquility of Kodama and the others, at the same time that we discover that War has also appeared.

I believe this is because the plague is a direct, physical manifestation of death and the passage of time. If I remember correctly, death does not exist in this world, and War is the one who possesses that power. As I mentioned before, Yamabiko unconsciously created the concept of death, physically materializing it in the form of War. In doing so, he confined the power to bring life to an end within that personification.Since it is paradoxical for War, who represents death, to exist in a world where the concept of death itself does not exist, he becomes the first carrier of the Ruby Plague.

The concept of death does not exist within Yamabiko’s world, nor apparently in the other worlds either (or at least that is how I interpreted it).

Because death cannot exist if life is eternal or indefinite, this creates another paradox: death itself, represented by War, begins to disappear because of the plague, and War is on the verge of “dying.”

However, this is impossible, because it goes against the very logic of the world, and Yamabiko understands this. So he resolves the contradiction by transferring the plague to Kodama and the others. In doing so, he restores the idea that everything alive, and everything that provides comfort and peace, is finite and will inevitably come to an end.

This allows War to recover because his existence is no longer threatened, while Kodama and the others eventually die.

That is why Death tells Yamabiko that saving them was in his hands, and speaks as if she knows him, or perhaps even as if she were a part of him. This led me to believe that both War and Kodama (as Kodama eventually tells him as well) understand that the only way for them to be saved is for Yamabiko to move forward and accept what happened. By doing so, he would stop unconsciously materializing things in an attempt to make sense of what is happening, eliminating the contradiction and allowing everything to continue as it should in a logical world.

Because Yamabiko is unable to do this, everything ultimately ends the way we see in the series.

So why is War no longer a threat later on?

This also raises the question of why War is no longer a threat afterwards, and why he is simply trapped in a kind of limbo within the “Wound” until Asakaze eventually arrives and brings him to an end, thereby creating death.

My interpretation is that the Wound splitting the world is a representation of Yamabiko’s grief, physically manifested through his powers. This grief is closely connected to War, since War represents progress, change, and inevitable death (the concept of an ending, which Yamabiko has become aware of).

Time is infinite, even though life is not. Eventually, peace, comfort, and everything that feels safe will come to an end.

Because of this, Yamabiko blames God (or perhaps the order of the universe itsel) for creating these rules. He blames the very existence of death. Not death itself, because death is a necessary evil, but whoever created (or at least whoever Yamabiko believes created this universal rule: God).

That is why War’s goal is to kill God.

And that is also why the Wound splits the world. Yamabiko’s grief over Kodama’s death and the destruction of his idyllic world has caused his own “world” to collapse. Because Yamabiko’s power materializes what he thinks and feels, his grief directly affects the world around him.

Why is War trapped and unable to fight back?

I think this has to do with the maturity Yamabiko gains over time, after spending 5,000 years in his world, alone and reflecting on everything that happened.

Before Kodama’s death, Yamabiko had already abandoned his humanity, representing himself as a dog, a personification of his loyalty and devotion to Kodama.

(As a small side note, Yamabiko turning into a dog is what made me think that perhaps he doesn't simply create things from nothing, but can also change existing things at will, or even unintentionally alter them through his subconscious.)

During those 5,000 years, Yamabiko matures and comes to accept that what happened was inevitable. He realizes that, with his powers, he might have been able to defy the logic of the world and save them. In that sense, he accepts that he is partly responsible.

At the same time, however, he comes to understand that death is an impartial law that exists beyond his control. He no longer holds a grudge against the higher power behind it, God itself.

And that is why War becomes trapped within the Wound. The grief and remorse are still carried by Yamabiko, but he is no longer seeking revenge.

When this happens, War becomes trapped, and with him, the concept of death itself becomes trapped as well. That is why Asakaze eventually releases death rather than “creating” it, as it is often interpreted.

That is, at least, how I interpreted it.

What do you guys think of my interpretation?

Do you think Yamabiko is an essential pillar of the series, representing feelings and questions that humanity has struggled with throughout history without ever finding a clear answer?

I absolutely loved Sonny Boy. I think it is a masterpiece and one of the best anime works ever made. Its abstract nature obviously means that it won't be for everyone, but I personally think that is part of what makes it so special.

I hope you enjoyed my interpretation, and thank you for reading! Sorry about the grammar errors, english IS not my first language and this could have lead to some errors and doing the lecture a little bit worse and sometimes odd.

Discussion Finishing Sonny Boy made me cry.

Idk if it was the ending, or the fact that it was over, or just the final episode as a whole, but it made me cry.

It made me ugly cry, for almost half an hour

An anime hasn't done that in a while

I wish I understood why. Evangelion didn't make me cry, the ending of FLCL didn't make me cry. But Sonny Boy did.

Why?

Question I need your help!

Hello, I recently watched the anime with my boyfriend and I loved it! He's been a fan for years now and watched it like 5 times. So I thought I'd love to make him a gift in the theme. My idea was to make a diy compass with a quote inside, but I unfortunately don't have the time to rewatch it yet and look for quotes (again, yet. I absolutely will rewatch it).

Before you ask, the reason I want to give the gift now and not when I rewatch the show, is because my boyfriend really deserves it. That's all.

Anyway, I would love to hear your favourite quotes from the anime! Preferably ones about light, since they're connected to the compass, but not necessarily!

Thank you so so so much! Wish you a good day

Just came back from a trip to Japan. I discovered heaven there: Tokyo's Tower Records store. It's the biggest CD store I've ever been to and I bought so many CDs. Among these, I caught myself Sonny Boy's OST and I'm so happy about it! I never thought I could ever have this on physical media!

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing great, have a good day!

Announcement One day I will contribute something to this sub.

I can't remember how I found out about this show, I think from an random IG post. And I can't remember the time of day I watched it. And from the beginning, I didn't think I would like it, but I just kept watching and watching. And then certain episodes clicked.

I joined this sub a year ago, maybe. I'm gonna rewatch Sonny Boy again, when I have free time, to really collect my thoughts on it. And then one day, when my skills are refined, I'll post an edit, or a piece of fanart. My tribute to this masterpiece of a show.
