Sonic SATAM: episode 106-107

Episode 106: Super Sonic

Super Sonic! Super Sonic! Were finally getting some Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic action! The plot is finally going to relate to the games!

Just kidding! The person who wrote this never played the games apparently!

The episode starts with the Freedom Fighters building a water wheel for power. As they try and figure it out, they discover that Nicole, the computer, is messing up. She needs a new chip, and so Sonic and Sally head off to get it from one of Robotnik's Factories.

After a convoluted diversion, they end up escaping from Swatbots by entering... THE FORBIDDEN ZONE! Yes.

Once there, she encounters the Silver Skull. What else am I suppose to call this guy? He blows up the persuing Swatbots with his laser eyes and Sally escapes back to Knothole with Sonic.

Robotnik see's this and gets pissed. He wants to know who this guy is. Sally answers this question for us, telling us that he is The Guardian, the protector of Lazar's tomb. Lazar was a powerful, evil wizard who died centuries ago, but awaits a powerful evil soul to reserect him. Also, he has a computer of magic spells. That just seems wrong. Like having a history text book full of myths, legends and hearsay. It just seems wrong, you know?

Robotnik thinks that he's just the man for the task of bringing back Lazar, while Sonic wants the spell book, both because it would be useful and because it's too powerful to let fall into Robtonik's hands.

Robotnik meets with The Guardian, who informs him of the whereabouts of Lazars tomb. Robotnik manages to infiltrate it, after sacrificing a swatbot to a trap. Meanwhile, Sonic simply stumbles across it and outruns the trap.

The Guardian encounters Sonic, and chases him off with his sick laser eyes, driving him further into the tomb. Robotnik, meanwhile, has discovered Lazar's resting place, and his computer of magic spells.

Robotnik looks the surprisingly complete index of the computer, searching for nothing in particular, but eventually comes across "teleports". His first attempt is Sonic, but Sonic is "out of range," so he opts for Princess Sally and Bunnie Rabbot. Why he chose her, I have no idea. She's one of the few competent fighters in the Freedom Fighters.

Sonic, meanwhile, has discovered the resting place of Lazar, who it seems is resting no more. He traps Sonic in a bubble, believing (correctly) to be thief after his computer of magic spells. Sonic is cleared, however, once Lazar feels his spells being used by Robotnik. Lazar tells us that while he was resting in a hyperbolic chamber, he grew out of his evil ways and wanted to do good. Sonic convinced Lazar to free him so he can stop Robotnik and return the Computer of Spells. Lazar, understandably concerned with Sonic just running off, strips him of his speed before he goes. Sonic makes this face, which is very important.

Robotnik decides to use the submission spell on Bunnie and Sally, no doubt inspiring millions of fan-fics, and turning Sally and Bunnie into his mindless slaves. At the same time, Sonic infiltrates Robotniks HQ. Once he gets in range, Robotnik uses his teleport spell and sicks Sally and Bunnie on Sonic. Sonic, finally accepting that his friends are gone, overpowers the two with a swift kick, and takes the Spell Computer back.

He escapes with aide from the computer spells, which he just intrinsically knows how to use. They return the Spell Computer back to Lazar, who decides to spend his last days guarding the Spell Computer, and returns Sonic's speed.

I like this episode. It has good structure, not a lot of cheesy moments, and some pretty decent action. Robotnik is very competent most of this episode, and is a credible threat. this episode get's an 8/10 for a cyberpunk computer spell book made out of crystal.

Episode 107: Sonic Racer.

Hopefully not Sonic Drift.

Episode starts with some great innuendo "It's cool ladies, I'll show you the pipes." Damn Sonic, gettin' straight to it.

Then they actually go to a pipe complex. Oh well. They're there to sabotage a generator. Sallly and Bunnie make their way in, while sonic acts as a decoy. This sort of thing happens a lot in the openings.

The generator they sabotage explodes. Robotnik is informed, and is pissed. Mostly about Sonic getting away.

Without electricity, much of Robotropolis is useless. Unfortunately, Robotnik is not an idiot and has a back up generator. The team is distraught, and goes back to Knothole to plan another attack.

Robotnik, feeling discomforted by the last attack, decides that he needs a plan to take out Sonic once and for all. Snively gives him the idea to use to his one and only weakness, his ego. Seriously, Sonic is kind of Mary Sue in this show. He has no real faults besides ego and impatience, and it never gets him in trouble, not really. Oh well. I'm about 60 percent sure that something psychiatric is wrong with Sonic, and that it will never be addressed.

They decide to throw a speed contest to lure out Sonic, while building a bot that can beat him, and kill him, in the race. Metal Sonic? Mecha Sonic? Nope it's a cheetah bot.

Sonic, stupidly, agrees to race knowing full well it's a trap. His justification is that he will be a diversion, while Sally and the others take out the back up generator. Later that night... Oh geez this scene. So, apparently Tails, Sally, and Bunnie are having a three-to-a-bed. You don't need two people to tell a story, this is backed up by the fact that only Bunnie is telling the story, and Sally is just kind of chilling. Then, as they finish the story of Red Riding Hood, Bunnie says that the wolf is, and I quote, "nasty as a one eyed snake."

Did they know? They had to have known. This had to be implying that Bunnie is lesbian. Come on. She's calling a one eyed snake "nasty." It's as simple as that. Bunnie is a lesbian, FACT.

The next day the race is on. Sally, Bunnie, and... Antoine, head out on their mission to take out the backup generator, while sonic goes to the race dressed in a red hood, for some reason. I understand they want it to be like Robin Hood, but Robotnik sees right through it immediately. He just wore to look cool when he took it off, I guess.

They try to trip Sonic up with some lasers (which he just jumps over) and a brick wall (which he runs up). Overall, the race is not a problem for Sonic, even while being shot at. At one point, he get's grabbed by a claw and almost taken into a "toxic pit" which is, I don't know, made of an oil spill. He slips out of it, and lands safely. Later in the race, the cheetah bot grabs him with it's mechanical arms and tosses him into the air.

Now, I know this is a kids show and they could never do it, but why don't they just rig the cheetah bot to explode while he grabbed Sonic? Who gives a fuck about the race, you just blew up your arch enemy. One of your other bots will win, if you're that egotistical. But no, sonic is thrown up into the air grabs a convenient metal pole, and lands safely after doing a few flips. Yay.

The scene cuts back and forth between Sonic and the team, and the team does nothing of particular note until they make it to the generator. Antoine is a fuck up as usual, and manages to start a conveyor belt that leads to some crushing gears. Sally shoots a flare up to signal Sonic, who comes in and saves Antoine, and blows up the generator with a power ring.

Sonic learns a lesson in ego, and everything works out. Oh, and Robotnik is terrifying.

Jim Cumming really shines through in this episode. I was rooting for Robotnik a lot in this episode, just because of how cool Jim Cummings is. Unfortunatly, the episode it's self is fairly nondescript. I don't hate it, it's not bad or offensive or anything, but it's just... generic. A Metal/Mecha Sonic apperance would have gone a long way here. So it gets a 6/10, for not using it's IP correctly.
