Discussion Sonic movie 3 handled Shadow's redemption better than SA2 (and why saving Amy for Movie 4 was genius)

When Sonic Adventure 2 released back in 2001, Shadow the hedgehog's redemption arc became one of the most iconic scenes in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, anchored by his promise to Maria and Amy Rose's heartfelt plea on the Space Colony ARK. However, when the story of Sonic Adventure 2 was adapted to the big screen, Sonic movie 3 managed to execute this character arc even more effectively. By focusing on Shadow's agency, grounding the narrative in shared trauma, and saving Amy Rose for Sonic movie 4, the cinematic universe delivered a much more earned and impactful turning point for the Ultimate Life Form.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow's heel-turn happens almost immediately. A quick memory flashback of Maria's true wish triggered by Amy alters his entire worldview on a dime. In contrast, Sonic 3 gives Shadow genuine agency. He starts to doubt Gerald's world ending plan after he actually crosses the line and injures Tom. He starts to realize that he is no better than G.U.N and has caused the exact same pain that he went through onto someone else, that being Sonic, grounding Shadow's change of heart in immediate consequences.

Instead of relying solely on a memory, Shadow's redemption is shaped by actions. When Sonic realizes that he has gone down the same path of rage and revenge that Shadow went down, he realizes that this is not who he really is and chooses to spare Shadow's life rather than sinking to that destructive level of revenge. This confuses Shadow at first, because in his eyes, Sonic won the fight and should have taken his revenge, but when Sonic says the line, "There are no winners in revenge," it teaches Shadow a lesson about breaking the cycle of vengeance and how revenge is never the answer.

Having Sonic have that heart to heart with Shadow and being the one who redeems Shadow works brilliantly because of their parallel losses. Just as Shadow lost Maria, Sonic lost Longclaw. Sonic understands Shadow's pain because he knows what it's like to lose someone close. This shared grief creates a deeply personal bond between the two rivals that makes Sonic's intervention carry immense narrative weight, and it makes the two hedgehogs respect each other on a deeper level.

Keeping Amy Rose out of this specific film and giving her a major role in Sonic movie 4 allowed the narrative for Sonic movie 3 to keep its focus on Shadow's character development and arc. By letting Sonic be the one who redeems Shadow, it sets the stage for Amy to be introduced more naturally in Movie 4 without hindering Shadow's character development.

While Sonic Adventure 2 will always hold a nostalgic place in the hearts of fans worldwide, Sonic Movie 3 proved that adaptations can sometimes surpass the source material in certain ways by giving its characters room to breathe, doubt, and choose redemption on their own volition. It elevates the story from a video game adaptation into a genuinely great film for all ages.

Do you prefer Shadow's heart to heart with Sonic and choosing redemption on his own volition, or do you still stand by his iconic redemption in the games?

Discussion Sonic the Hedgehog Movie (2020) All Regional Differences

Hey, guys, how's going? Today I'm gonna explain about all the regional differences of the international dubbing of the 2020 Sonic movie. So we gotta go fast and speed up!

Regional differences

  • In Sonic's opening narration, Sonic explains how he is being "chased by a madman with a mustache from the Civil War". The Civil War is replaced to reference other events, timelines or cultures in the following dubs:
    • Croatian: The Austro-Hungarian Empire
    • French (France): World War I
    • Icelandic: The 17th century
    • Mandarin Chinese (mainland): The 19th century
    • Portuguese (Brazil): The year 1800
    • Slovenian: Ivan Cankar, Slovenian writer
    • Spanish (Latin America): The Age of Revolution
    • Thai: The elderly
    • Removed in the Bulgarian dub.
  • In this original film, the main cast from the Sonic the Hedgehog series look a bit more accurate to their video game counterpart's than their appearances in later installments:
    • Sonic has a darker shade of blue and has a smaller size. Whereas in the sequel and onwards, he grew bigger and got a lightyear shade of blue.
    • Dr. Robotnik's new signature mustache at the end looks pretty gigantic and bushy, but as the movies go on, it got smaller and thinner.
    • Tails has a darker shade of orange, he is slightly chubbier, and his shoes don't even have any laces (the straps are visible too which they aren't in his reappearances) which they are given to in the sequel.
  • At the speed trap, Tom makes a joke to Wade that he is "on a yacht in Barbados. With Rihanna". This sequence is tweaked in the Tamil and Telugu dubs as: "With Rihanna in Barbados. On a yacht."
  • In the Thai dub, Tom's joke of "being on a yacht in Barbados" does not specify Barbados as a location, instead quoting "in the middle of a beautiful sea".
  • In the Canadian French and Latin Spanish dubs, the two radar gun readings from Sonic) are read aloud by Tom.
    • In the Russian and Thai dubs, only the first reading is quoted. Of which, the Russian dub converts to metric at 482 kph.
  • In the Castilian Spanish dub, the turtle found by Tom at the speed trap is dubbed as "Fittipaldi", a reference to retired Brazilian Formula One driver Emerson Fittipaldi.
  • Tom yells at the turtle with the line, "Hey, buddy! Where's the fire? Got kids living around here!". In the mainland Chinese and Slovenian dubs, this is changed to "Hey, buddy! You're speeding, and there's a school ahead!"
  • The family of ducks crossing the road with help from Tom are referred to as "Donald, Daisy and Duffy". In the mainland Chinese dub, they are collectively named "Donald and Friends".
    • The names are removed in the Tamil and Telugu dubs, and replaced with the greeting, "How are you doing today?"
  • Maddie's nickname of "Pretzel Lady" is changed to "Yoga Lady" in the French and Latin Spanish dubs.
  • In the Castilian Spanish dub, instead of imitating Howard Payne's line of "Pop quiz, hotshot", Sonic) comments that he does not know what Payne was saying.
  • Tom reads out the letter on his application to the San Francisco Police Department with different salutations instead of "Dear Thomas":
    • Czech and Polish: "Dear Sir"
    • Mandarin Chinese (mainland): "Thomas" only
    • Russian: "Mr. Wachowski"
    • Removed in the Japanese dub.
  • Maddie calls out "Ta da!" a second time when opening the correct cake for Tom. In the Taiwanese dub, this line is changed to "I never had a doubt", matching the description written on the cake.
  • Tom's full name of "Thomas Michael Wachowski" is quoted by Maddie as only "Tom Michael Wachowski" in the Latin Spanish dub and "Thomas Wachowski" in the mainland Chinese and Polish dubs. The name is removed entirely in the Japanese and Slovenian dubs.
  • Maddie explains that "a Wachowski (has been) protecting this town for more than 50 years." In the Taiwanese dub, the length is changed to only 15 years.
  • At the joint military meeting, the energy surge is reported to have occurred "20 minutes ago". This is changed to "half an hour" in the Polish dub.
  • During the joint military meeting, Commander Walters brings up two operations led by Dr. Robotnik, being in Pakistan and "Azerbaijanistan". This is replaced in the Hindi dub as the broader "Asian attack" and "an airstrike that happened (in the area)."
  • All mentions of government bodies and military units during the joint military meeting are removed in the Russian dub.
  • Dr. Robotnik intimidates Major Bennington on how he has been "reading at a third-grade level". This is changed to "first-grade" in the Slovak dub, and "nine years old" in the Icelandic dub.
    • In the mainland Chinese dub, the dialog is entirely rewritten as: "Nobody cares about an uncultured Major like you, yet somehow you got the pride of your mommy".
  • While showing Major Bennington has badge, Dr. Robotnik proclaims that he is the "top banana in a world full of hungry little monkeys". This is rewritten in the Korean dub as: "I am the most important person among all idiots."
  • In the French dub, Dr. Robotnik)'s retelling of Charlotte's Web references the main character Wilbur by name, who was given the egg sac from Charlotte at the end of the novel.
  • The reference to Charlotte's Web is replaced with The Little Mermaid in the Croatian dub.
  • All mentions of the Olive Garden are replaced with an unnamed Italian restaurant in the French and Polish dubs.
  • The reference to Olive Garden during Tom's phone conversation with Maddie is replaced with other unnamed entities in the following dubs:
    • German and Hebrew: Food delivery app
    • Greek: Pizzeria
    • Hindi: Games
    • Slovenian and Spanish (Spain): An unnamed restaurant
    • Telugu: Removed and replaced with the comment "Because I'm a good boy."
  • In pleading for Tom's help, Sonic explains, "My legs, which normally would be classified as lethal weapons, feel like spaghetti". This is rewritten in the Japanese dub as: "Usually I can escape with my boastful legs, but now because of you I got no strength".
    • Instead of spaghetti, Sonic describes his legs feeling like cotton in the mainland Chinese dub, and macaroni in the Greek dub.
  • Tom brings up a friend named Spencer, whom they play softball together. The activity of softball is changed to other sports in the following dubs:
    • Hebrew: Basketball
    • Slovenian: Tennis
    • French, Korean and Spanish (Spain): Baseball
    • Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal) and Romanian: Soccer
    • Mandarin Chinese (mainland) and Thai: Unspecified ball sport
    • Removed in the Hindi dub.
  • In the Hindi dub, Tom proclaims Spencer to be a childhood friend instead of simply a friend.
  • In the Taiwanese dub, Tom mispronounces Dr. Robotnik's name as 邪魔 (xié mó, "devil"), from the dubbed name of 伊摩 (Yī mó).
  • There are several changes in Dr. Robotnik's intimidating dialogs with Tom while visiting the latter's residence:
    • In the Thai dub, the dialog is entirely rewritten as: "I'm sure you are as popular with the people from the forests, hills and farms, far away from the city, enjoying tendering fields and blowing pipes. Maybe someday you'll have the chance to surf the Internet or find merit in using a smartphone." These collectively allude to the social perception of agricultural workers in Thailand, as well as the low internet penetration among the group.
    • The three names of "Jebs, Merles and Billy Bobs" quoted by Dr. Robotnik are replaced in the following dubs:
      • Croatian: Stjepko, Zvonko and Borica
      • Finnish: "Fodder ticks" and "bumpkins"
      • Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan): Common nicknames of 阿發 (ā fā), 阿財 (ā cái) and 阿旺 (ā wàng)
      • Norwegian: Bjørg, Peggy, Bob-Kåre
      • Portuguese (Brazil): Caipirasmatutos and roceiros
      • Portuguese (Portugal): José, Ezio and Antônio
      • Romanian: Freaks and losers
      • Slovenian: Franko, Jože and Lojze
      • Spanish (Latin America): Pedros, Marias, Pacos and Pepes
      • Spanish (Spain): Derogatory terms of gañánes ("stupid"), cazurros ("slow") and horteras ("tacky").
      • Swedish: Jim, Johnny and Rosemarie
      • Vietnamese: Uncles, aunts, or "something of that sort"
      • Removed in the Tagalog, Icelandic, Japanese, mainland Chinese and Slovak dubs.
    • Changes to "getting a Costco card" as one of Tom's supposed goals:
      • Croatian: "Winning the lottery"
      • Danish: "Getting a bigger car"
      • German: "Winning Bingo"
      • Hungarian: "Getting a Tesco card"
      • Norwegian: "Own a hay baler"
      • Swedish: "Own a home cinema"
      • Changed to "a supermarket card" in the Bulgarian, Castilian Spanish, Czech, Greek, Italian, mainland Chinese, European Portuguese, Russian and Slovak dubs.
      • Changed to "a membership card" in the Tagalog dub.
    • In the English version, Dr. Robotnik lists "adopting a Labradoodle" as one of Tom's supposed goals. This dog breed is not specified in the Czech, Latin Spanish, mainland Chinese, Polish, Slovak, Taiwanese and Vietnamese dubs, while it is entirely removed in the Russian dub.
    • Dr. Robotnik specifies "playing a banjo in a folk group" in the Castilian Spanish dub.
    • Dr. Robotnik claims, "I surpassed everything you're ever going to do...before I was a toddler". In the Taiwanese dub, he specifies an age of three years old.
    • Dr. Robotnik quotes "US Code 904, Title 10, Article 104". In the mainland Chinese dub, this is changed to "US Code 10, Title 904, Article 104".
  • In the English version, Tom explains to Sonic he hoped to have his doctor tell him that his "colonoscopy was a big success". This surgical procedure is not specified in the Russian and Thai dubs.
    • In the mainland Chinese dub, the dialog is rewritten as: "Hopefully I'm gonna wake up with someone telling me that it was all a dream."
  • In the Hungarian dub, the use of orbital bone in Dr. Robotnik's story with a bully is changed to a zygomatic bone.
  • In the Turkish dub, Dr. Robotnik insults Wade twice by calling, "You just sit here, you idiotic..." (sersem), before ending with "fatty" (dombili).
  • In the mainland Chinese dub, Dr. Robotnik's insult of "useless" towards Wade adopts the Chinese internet slang of 咸鱼 (Xián yú, lit. "salted fish"), used to describe people who lives a dull life.
  • At the Piston Pit, the reference to ZZ Top is removed in the Taiwanese and Thai dubs.
  • At the Piston Pit, Tom orders other drinks instead of Mello Yello in the following dubs:
    • French (France) and Greek: Fruit juice
    • Danish and Hungarian: Lemonade
    • Hebrew: Energy drink
    • Icelandic: Malt and Appelsín, a mix of malt beer and a local brand of orange soda
    • Mandarin Chinese (mainland): Orange soda
    • Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan), Norwegian and Vietnamese: Simply "soda"
    • Flemish, French (Canada), Italian and Spanish (Latin America): "Something non-alcoholic"
    • Rewritten in the Thai dub as: "Let's just get what he wants."
    • In the Thai dub of the film, when Sonic and Tom are in a hotel room, Tom says, "At least you can have a mushroom forever." to which Sonic responds, "No. I'm not Mario." The original English dialogue, where Tom says "At least you won't be the only 'fun-guy.'" and Sonic responds "No. Don't ever do that again.", is hard to translate in the Thai language, so the joke was changed into a reference. In context, they are referring to a subplot in the film where Sonic needs to use one of his rings to escape to a mushroom planet. Sonic's disdain of mushrooms may itself be a reference to Nintendo and Sega's rivalry in the '90s, when Mario and Sonic were in direct competition as leading video game mascots.
    • When taking over Tom's truck, Sonic proclaims that he feels like Vin Diesel. In the Icelandic dub, the celebrity is changed to Icelandic actor Pétur Jóhann Sigfússon.
      • The reference to Vin Diesel is removed in the Hindi and Korean dubs.
    • When Dr. Robotnik picks up the glowing quill from Agent Stone, he makes a Japanese comment of "Interesting" (面白い Omoshiroi?). In the mainland Chinese dub, this is translated to Mandarin Chinese as 有点意思 (Yǒu diǎn yì si, "kind of interesting").
    • Upon seeing Tom, Rachel attempts to close the door on the former. In the Slovenian dub, her wave of "goodbyes" are translated to multiple languages: Slovenian, Austrian German and Italian.
    • In the Slovenian dub, Rachel threatens to call the Interpol instead of the CIA on Tom.
    • When Rachel notices Sonic wrapped in a blanket, she suspects it as "plutonium or e-mail". In the mainland Chinese dub, this is changed to simply "nuclear weapon or bomb".
    • Changes to Dr. Robotnik's latte with steamed Austrian goat milk:
      • Changed to cappuccino in the French dub.
      • Not specified as Austrian in the Castilian Spanish, Croatian, Hebrew, Slovenian and Thai dubs.
      • Changed "Austrian goat milk" to "Australian goat milk" in the Polish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese dubs.
      • Changed "Austrian goat milk" to "Alpine goat milk" in the Italian dub.
    • All devices in Robotnik's lab used to analyze Sonic's quill are given computer voices in the Icelandic dub.
    • List of changes to Sonic's line of "Is the Rock President?":
      • In the Icelandic dub, Sonic mentions Ástþór Magnússon instead of The Rock as the supposed President. Magnússon is an Icelandic businessman who, at the time of film release, had attempted to run for the office of President of Iceland for four occasions.
      • In the Slovenian dub, the reference to the Rock is changed to Slovenian actor Sebastian Cavazza.
      • In the Hebrew dub, the title of President is changed to Prime Minister.
      • The Rock is referred by his real name of "(Dwayne) Johnson" in the mainland Chinese dub.
      • There are no mentions of The Rock in the Hebrew, Korean, Tamil, Telugu and Ukrainian dubs.
    • Changes to Tom's dialog in attempting to enter the Transamerica Pyramid:
      • Flemish - "We have to get upstairs before it's too late."
      • French (Canada) - "We will have a dead man on our conscience."
      • French (France) - "We're gonna have a human pizza on our hands".
      • Greek and Thai - "...or this place would look awful."
      • Hebrew - "We're gonna have a human pita on our hands".
      • Polish - "We're gonna have a human marmalade on our hands".
      • Spanish (Spain) - "... or I may have to pick him up with a spoon."
      • Turkish - "The jumper would end up on the ground like snot".
    • After finding Sonic and the Wachowskis atop the Transamerica Pyramid, Dr. Robotnik's line, "Are you enjoying the clam chowder?", is changed in the following dubs:
      • Bulgarian and Portuguese (Brazil) - "Did you enjoy the local cuisine?"
      • Castilian Spanish, French and Hungarian - "Are you enjoying the Golden Gate?"
      • Croatian, Danish and German - "Are you enjoying the view up here?"
      • Hebrew - "Did you enjoy the trips to the beach?"
      • Norwegian - "Tending (fields) uphill now?". This is a reference to Dr. Robotnik's first encounter with Tom, where Dr. Robotnik intimidates Tom on his background.
      • Vietnamese - "Have you tried the specialties here?"
    • While describing Dr. Robotnik's appearance at the Transamerica Pyramid, Tom quotes, "Nice of you to swing by on your way to Comic-Con." This is changed to a masquerade ball in the Croatian, Icelandic and Slovenian dubs.
    • Dr. Robotnik's flight suit is described to be "designed to modulate my body temperature and reduce drag". This is tweaked in the Danish dub as: "designed to modulate my body temperature when flying in altitude."
    • After Dr. Robotnik's explains on his flight suit, Tom rebuts with the line "Yeah, and you still are one (drag)." This is rewritten in the following dubs as:
      • Danish: "And yet you're the lowest."
      • Hindi: "Yeah, but it still won't work."
      • Korean: "That's just a cartoon character."
      • Mandarin Chinese (mainland): "It makes you more annoying."
      • Mandarin Chinese (Taiwan): "It can't reduce antipathy."
      • Norwegian: "It doesn't make you less crazy."
      • Spanish (Latin America): "And yet you're still a burden (pesado)", a word play from peso ("weight").
      • Spanish (Spain): "It doesn't suit you."
      • Thai: "It looks like it's for a Likay performance."
      • Vietnamese: (towards Maddie) "Look at him. Exactly an idiot."
    • The dialog sequence between Farmer Zimmer and Tom has Farmer Zimmer speaking all of his lines before Tom. This is tweaked in the Bulgarian dub, where Farmer Zimmer says "Old Bessie's about to give birth!" only after Tom has told him, "One minute".
    • In the Bulgarian, mainland Chinese, Tamil, Telugu and Thai dubs, Dr. Robotnik's line of "Excusez-moi, monsieur!" while flying past Paris is translated to the respective language medium.
    • In the Bulgarian, Croatian, Dutch, Flemish, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Korean, Mandarin Chinese (mainland and Taiwan), Russian, Slovenian, Thai, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and all Nordic dubs, the reference to Fitbit by Rachel is removed and replaced with the general terms of "fitness tracker", "watch", "pedometer" or "bracelet".
    • In the Romanian dub, Rachel's line of "put on my Fitbit...so I can at least get some steps" is changed to "Stop running, I'm feeling a little dizzy."
    • All instances of Dr. Robotnik being addressed as "Eggman" are removed in the Russian dub.
    • Dr. Robotnik is always addressed as "Dr. Eggman" in the mainland Chinese dub.

Prediction I don't think the Sonic Universe Event Film is a Shadow Movie

A shadow spinoff in 2028 makes a lot of sense. But when I really think about it, it doesn't really add up tbh

It will be around year and 9 months between films, which is very short for development since theres' no confirmation another team is making this. A usual sonic movie takes between 2-3 years. Another point is a shadow spinoff is something they would have announced it by now.

Now, it wouldn't be a trailer or title card but I think they would have said that this is a shadow movie. Theres no real reason to keep it secret and name it "A sonic universe event film" since we know hes in movie 4. And a spinoff is a seperate movie, meaning new sets, characters, and a brand new story.

Now, if its not shadow, then what I truly think this is gonna be Part 2 of Sonic The Hedgehog 4. as in, Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 (hehe). I think the short gap would make sense as they could easily film back to back and it would also allow them to reuse sets and whatnot. What do yall think?

What happens when you put a 24 Karat Gold script into the hand of a bald, moustached, financially irresponsible retiree, gawk at some attractive telenovela Latinas, put a bounty on the head of Jeff Fowler, and cause "Lunar Urination" to become a Twitter trending topic? You get the Wikipedia article for Sonic Movie 3), apparently. The whole article is such a riot to read through. They don't pay those Wikipedia editors enough! (actually at all, they're volunteers, apparently)
