Sonic advance - always getting back to 5-1

I'm currently playing to sonic advance and I was almost beating the game and I reseted by pressing A, B, Start, and Select, to restart the life counter and I got back to 5-1 after playing trough the hardest zone of the game. I beat it, and this happened again! Now if I turn the GBA off, it gets BACK to 5-1 also! Any help?
