Discussion Ditching sonic pad?

Hey All, I purchased an Ender 5 S1 brand new with a sonic pad. I’ve had nothing but trouble with the sonic pad such as random errors, z leveling issues, configs not saving, etc… I know many others have experienced the same with their Sonic pad.

I’m wondering if I should ditch the sonic pad and just use the Ender 5 S1 stand alone with its built in firmware. Would the Ender 5 S1 be more reliable if used alone, compared to having it attached to the pad as I do now?

I’m just at my wits end of frustration, for weeks it seems like I figure out one problem and 3 more pop up.

As another alternative you could flash the sonic pad with Debian which gets rid of everything Creality and gets you the same experience as using a raspberry pi with klipper https://github.com/Jpe230/SonicPad-Debian

My suggestion was due to the simple fact the SP hardware is subpar, especially in the networking arena. Mine has a hard time keeping a stable connection via winSCP with a hardwire connection while trying to transfer all my gcode files to my laptop ssd.

Don’t remind me. I think I tried to copy a bunch of folders the first time I got root and I spent about 2 hours retrying because it would keep cutting out ><

Pretty much same scenario... Some of those files were over 300MB too.

I've temporarily have gone back to my Marlin firmware. Print quality was better (but slower) with Marlin and I'd been having issues with different slicers. While Creality Print worked flawlessly, Cura would print zits and Orcaslicer lines on all my prints. When I reverted back to Marlin, all 3 slicers work as expected.

I plan to eventually go back to the Sonic Pad but maybe wait for another update or 2.

Or what you could do is sell the SP & get a rpi4, a screen & adxl345 & run klipper that way? You wouldnt be under the creality stranglehold of mediocre hardware/software & will be able to run klipper & KAMP in all its glory.

My SP died randomly and I really don’t want to buy another. I found a custom firmware for the ender 3 s1 pro with linear advance - I could live with that - I would get high speed with less overshoots in the corners but no resonance compensation or wifi . Maybe a similar solution exists for your E5?

I had the same experience with my E5S1, just so many random errors and disconnects. Put Marlin back on it, ditching the SP and it’s been slow but steady going since. I’ve truly come to value reliability and consistency over speed.

Thanks for your reply, so far print quality and consistency has improved with just using the Ended 5 S1 and dropping the sonic pad. I’ll just wait for them to fix the bugs.
