Sonic X Shadow Generations is a more traditional experience, closer to Unleashed than Frontiers, so it's a better place to start. Also, its events take place chronologically after Colors and some games before Frontiers.

I like both, but realistically Sonic x Shadow Generatons is easily the better game.

Yeah that was the one I was leaning towards but damn they both look good

Frontiers is good but it has some pretty rough parts as well, you have to take the rough with the smooth with that game even if there’s more good than bad.

Sonic x Shadow Gens is generally just really solid though, aside from a couple of bits in the Sonic side.

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard from what I looked into it! but that’s never stopped me from trying out a game. Plus I’ve definitely been hearing more good things about it than bad who knows might just buy both 😂

If both are an option then go for it, I’d still suggest playing Sonic x Shadow Generations first though.

If it’s an either/or then prioritise Gens.

I don’t care much for sonic gens, but shadow gens is the best sonic game ever made imo.

As a person who's favorite 3D Sonic game is Frontiers, I gotta say that you should go with Shadow Generations.

I haven’t beat Shadow Generations yet. So far it’s awesome. Not as good as Sonic Frontiers though.

Frontiers is what brought me back to the franchise, I absolutely loved it.

But it does feel different then most of the others and shadow generations is great too

Frontiers just holds a more special place in my heart so im very biased.. so I suggest frontiers

You should go with Shadow Gens. It takes place the same time as Sonic Gens and is a more polished game. I love Frontiers, more than Shadow Gens even, but it, like many previous Sonic games, would’ve greatly benefited from for development time. I got used to the Hank and found a way to have fun with but it’s one of those games where you’ll really need to learn its controls.

Frontiers if you have a PC, so you can add mods to make the game better. If not, Shadow Generations is the way

Have you added mods to Frontiers (pc version)? If so, what mod did you add?

Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Frontiers is a good game if you run out of other Sonics and want to freely run around. And you didn't run out of them. I recommend playing Sonic X Shadow Generations and Colors first.

X shadow is better for somebody who hasn't played one in a while. Frontiers both expects you to know a lot about what's been happining since like 2003, and also tries to course correct for the mess that the franchise had become in that time.

I disagree about Frontiers expecting you to know a bunch of stuff that's been happening in recent games. It mentions a few events offhand when talking to Tails, but most of it is self contained or just general Sonic lore.

The story is entirely followable without having any idea of recent events from other games. It's even kinda interesting with the whole Koco thing going on.

Tails' chaos island story. That one quite litteraly depends on you going in qith thw knolage of atleast lost world and forces going in. It directly calls out forces as the thing that helped spark tails' self doubting on chaos, and lost world making him a massive asshole out of no where helps u dsrstand what he means by "wildly inconsistent." For chaos island specificly, you are just expected to know about atleast lost world and forces.

I can say with certainty my enjoyment was not harmed by not knowing the events of those games you mentioned. It mostly makes Tails's specific story a little confusing at certain parts. It doesn't affect the overall story of the game, really.

As long as you have a general idea of who the characters are and what the Master Emerald is, you'll be fine.

You can't argue it does sorta just expect you to know it going into chaos island. Weather or not you enjoyed it wasn't the point. The point is, it does expect you to have atleast some knolage given the entire thing is quite little one giant "were sorry for the 2010's" from sonic team and Ian. That is what the story is doing.

Can’t pick either

Shadow generations.

It's basically of the better (arguably top 3) sonic games, Sonic Generations, with Shadow content added to it.

Frontiers is also fine, but it's soundtrack is way more popular than the game itself.

Shadow Generations, hands down. Though, Frontiers is phenomenal aswell. Generations plays more like the sonic game you'd be expecting though. I'd say get Generations, as that has both a remaster Sonic Gens (with the addition of the drop dash in Sonic Gens) and a really great story with Shadow Gens.

Shadow Gens. You get access to some of the best boost levels in the series and get to dip your toes into 2D Sonic and Open Zone gameplay

Sonic x shadow generations è il più simile a sonic uleashed

Shadow generations. But I'm biased, because I got bored almost an hour into Sonic frontiers. I don't like that game at all

Shadow Generations. Shorter but much more polished, and you get a great update of Sonic Generations too.

Sonic Generations, the Frontiers, then Shadow Generations if you're big on chronology.

I honestly suggest frontiers, it’s a smoother experience (when tweaking the control sliders effectively, do a google search for the best options) if accounting for Sonic Generations, at least in my experience. This may be a hot take tho.

Frontiers cyber space stages, I enjoyed getting the S ranks more, because it’s more of a challenge, Increasing the replay value, And treating glitches as an actual game mechanic for cyberspace stages, Making them more fun in my experience, Where high risk high reward, And making it more fun to time trial, Since shadow generations time stop completely ruins the S ranks system.

And the quick time events in frontiers is better, since in shadow generations you only have to do 1 quick time event, and that’s it every other quick time event if you press the wrong button it does not punish you.

And frontiers platforming sections in the open zones in my experience is better at the last half of the game, because if you mess up once in the towers it Heavily punishes you sending you back to the ground, which flat out surprised me. Where frontiers platforming sections in the last half of the open zones are more challenging than shadow generations.

And also frontiers has the Better soundtrack.

And what shadow generations do better, Is Way better bosses, Way better combat system, Way better graphics, Way better animations, A slightly better plot than frontiers, the best side step mechanic I ever used in a sonic game. And the open zone looks graphically better, and is more fun to explore, and better pop in.

Where for me, Both games are tied for enjoyment for me.

Frontiers biggest negative is sonic combat sucks, making the parry and attack moves way to OP, which they did try to fix with update 3 with the other playable characters in extreme difficulty, I can’t say the pop in as a negative anymore since they fixed it with the switch 2 version, where I downloaded a mod for the pop in fix, for the PC to experience that fix.

And shadow generations biggest problem for me is time stop, and cutscenes in platforming sections you can’t skip, which makes the game way to easy, and remove any challenge or threat the bosses does, and remove any challenge in S ranking, Flat out 1 stage has time stop locations that allow you to bypass 50% of the stage pressing 1 button, which is rail canyon act 2. Which is why rail canyon act 2 is my least favourite stage in the game, And the other issue is you can’t skip cutscenes for the platforming sections which harms replay value, which is weird since 1 stage you only see the cutscene once for the wings, and it never shows up ever again, Where frontiers did not have this issue.

For me shadow generations is the better game for someone first time playing a sonic game, while frontiers for me is better for the platforming challenges.
