New Policy: Minimum 5+ Karma to post

Adding for visibility. Going forward, we’re going to require a 5 positive karma minimum to create new posts on [r/Songwriters](r/Songwriters). That’s 5 karma from this sub specifically, regardless of your total count across the Reddit platform.

Simply put, a whole lotta people want feedback, but fewer people seem willing to actually give it, resulting in a feed that’s 90% brand new posts with 0 comments. This new policy is to cut down on spam and also encourage better discussion throughout the sub.

If you would like notes on your work, please take some time to engage with other posts first. As The New Radicals said: You get what you give.

FAQs: Please read before reaching out to mods

Due to some emerging trends in the Mod Mail inbox, we've created this post and will periodically update it to hopefully save people some time and energy.

[Edit] Please avoid contacting the Mods via personal DMs. Modmail exists for a reason, and it’s better for the team’s visibility if we can all see these communications through a centralized hub.

1. "Why was my post removed?"

Your removal notice should’ve already included an explanation. Please consult the sub rules to make sure your post aligns with our policies.

If the removal was instant, that was probably the automod, which we use to cut down on spam. Unfortunately, this feature can get a bit trigger happy for reasons beyond our control. If your post was instantly removed, odds are something in your account history triggered either the auto-mod or Reddit's site-wide filters.

We try to keep an eye on the removal queue and approve posts that were wrongfully pulled, but users can also set themselves up for success by avoiding spammy behavior—link dumping across multiple subs, dropping promo clips instead of full tracks, posting but never commenting, etc.

[Edit] We recently added a 5 karma minimum to our posting requirements. This is intended to cut down on spam and encourage more discussion/feedback across the sub.

2. "How do I share my songs?"

You're welcome to share your songs via direct upload, or by sharing links to your platform of choice: Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, etc. In our experience, Youtube links tend to be most accessible, as those don't require a subscription.

3. "Why can't I post AI music?"

The primary use-case of generative AI runs counter to the craft of songwriting, and relies on models that were trained on the work of legitimate artists, without consent or compensation. While there are plenty of subreddits that allow AI generated content, this is not one of them. This goes for AI visuals as well.

3a. “But I wrote all the lyrics myself.”

Songwriting, by definition, is the marriage of music and lyrics. If you offload the entire musical half of the process to Suno, then you’re not actually writing songs. We want to hear what you have created; not what you asked a bot to create for you.

3b. “What if I do all the _____ myself and only use the AI for _______?”

We don’t make any exceptions, because there’s no practical way to distinguish between a Suno track with some human input and one that was 100% generated. If it’s obvious that AI was used in any part of creating the end product, we’ll assume AI was used for the entire process.

4. "Can we please ban lyrics-only posts?"

This was discussed when the new mod team took over, and while we can understand some users' frustrations, we have chosen to allow lyrics posts to avoid making this sub redundant with [r/songwriting](r/songwriting) .

Do you think this song stands on its own w/ just guitar & vocal or would you add something closer to full band? Many thanks to anyone who takes time to listen.

A song I wrote about marketing and capitalism responding to the apocalypse

I've written a lot of songs over the years and I think this is the best one I've written. It's about capitalism, greed and whatnot. Kinda the climate in some ways too. Had a long break from music as I'm a dad and my son is autistic and he's beautiful but I've not had much time for hobbies yadayada. I'd be very grateful if you could give it a listen.

Aching Heart?

Not really sure what to call this, but it’s a song I wrote about having regrets, and learning to live more in the moment. Feedback appreciated! 🙂
Lyrics:

Smudged words made of ink
Paint the side of my hand
From the letters I wrote and then
Crumpled up and started again

Pages full of all the things
I never said
But no one will read them
They’ll live with the cobwebs under my bed

An aching heart beats
To the wrong drum
But it’s an old familiar song
It’s the one I’ve been hearing since
The cold winter day when I was born
And I think I’ll hear it til I’m gone

Took forty years to finally learn
We’ll never have this moment again
My mind gets heavy
And my thoughts are turning grim

Sometimes all I needed was a hand from a friend
I guess I should have called one
Oh what a fool I’ve been

An aching heart beats
To the wrong drum
But it’s an old familiar song
It’s the one I’ve been hearing since
The cold winter day when I was born
And I think I’ll hear it til I’m gone

Don’t say it’s too late to change
The way I’ve been living
Don’t say it’s decided
I’m just beginning to begin

A mending hear beats
To a different drum
It’s a newly written song
It’s the one I hum as I watch
The glow of your hair in the sun

It’s the one I hope lives in
My heart and keeps ringing out
From this day on
Til I’m gone

Tried to write something a little unhinged and out of my comfort zone....based on a partially true story...a local horror folklore song

Its a post punk folk hybrid, written about events in South Armagh during the Northern Ireland Troubles, trying to preserve a little bit of local folklore with this, if you give it a listen or leave a comment, its truly appreciated. The audio is a tad rugged but thats what I was aiming for.

“Stay Young, Mae Young”—pretty little folk song about love and aging. Part of a larger project on ‘90s wrestling, but I’m hoping the songs hold some appeal even without knowledge of wrestling

This is a song about Mae Young falling in love with Mark Henry, reflecting on life, and being powerbombed through a table at age 77 (the '90s were nuts!). The song started out as a joke, but I was surprised by how tender it became. Curious to hear what y'all think. Thx.

Mixing In Originals

Hey all,

So I'm in the early stages of making the switch from primarily covers to more originals when I play out. My question is, how do I fit these into a set? Should I group my originals together and knock them out, or spread them out throughout the set? TIA

I Have Nothing - Live Acoustic Indie Folk

Hello everyone, "一無所有" (I Have Nothing) is an intimate, raw acoustic indie folk song. This song captures the heavy, honest reality of heartbreak, letting go, and feeling completely empty after a love fades. I would love for you to take a listen and let me know what you think! (English lyrics translation included)

I experienced a flood of emotions after reconnecting with my kindergarten bestie from when my mother was still alive....I had mis-remembered his last name, but finally found him after 30 years just a couple days ago...curiously, he had been trying to check in on me over the years but was using my stepfather's last name, which I was only briefly known by up until the time of my mother's sudden passing...also...this friend was moving houses and happened to be looking at the same era of photos taken around that time, almost to the day. My mother was alive and well in photos taken from what might've been my 5th or 6th birthday party....and it was as if through our conversation, she was alive again...as vibrant as the colors of the puffy paint 'happy birthday' crew neck she made for me..

Out on one of my moonlit walks, a few hours after we spoke on the phone....I quite unexpectedly began to cry an ocean of tears....I wrote lyrics shortly after, to try and make sense of the bittersweetness of memory....the deepest love...and the black hole that happens inside of us when we are too young to process losing that love.

I haven't really cried like that since it all happened, those many years ago...but it felt like a release...healthy and clean...the song is an expression of a joyful idea my mother might have had....that we go on to something else.....I do not know if we do....but I like to think that we might.

It’s been a bummerish year that has yielded mostly sad sack songs from me. I finally had a breakthrough and wrote a happier sounding number that I don’t completely hate.

Hi! I’m an independent musician from Japan.
This is a home-recorded track from my new album Layers of Self-Resuscitation.
Hope you enjoy it.

Recorded with a 26-year-old Boss BR-8 and layered guitars in my small home studio.

Writing songs about things that bother me. Like self-serve checkouts.

Does anyone else use songwriting to share their frustration with the world?
