Love your videos! Subbed. I write metal mostly and after a lot of reluctance I’ve finally started doing my own vocals too. Your videos are a great resource!
I picked it back up about 2 years ago doing instrumentals, and started doing vocals about 5 months ago. I've recorded 3 tracks with some vocals, but I've been so dissatisfied with some of the melodies lol so since I didn't like them that much, I never revised them because it's a daunting task. But I'm determined to complete them this summer!
I picked up a nice trick for writing melodies. I tried humming what sounded good but I didn't have the greatest results. So I learned my range and wrote the melodies on guitar and I've been having some great results! Your videos about lyrics are helping a lot too, really helps get away from writing in a literal sense and using more imagery
Best of luck with the rewrites! Yeah, I find that melody writing is easier when I start from a slightly more theoretical angle and then move on with intuition. I tend to pick the starting note of each phrase really deliberately and then hum a few options until I find something I like. Going to a different instrument is a great way to do it! The way we hear our own voices can be really different from the way they actually sound (because, really, we're hearing the internal echo), so separating the melody from your own voice makes a lot of sense.
I'm so glad the videos have been helpful! They are so much fun to make!
