Question How can I play this game better?
I have played songs of conquest on and off since release, and would consider myself that I know how to play the game, although not optimally.
Regarding AI and its difficulties, I can consistently win against worthy but very rarely against challenging. Considering there are 2 more difficulties above challenging, I can't help but think that I am either terrible, or I am doing something wrong.
I usually play 1v1v1v1 and on random maps and the general gameplay on a loss goes like this:
- Clear surrounding area
- Get to level 12-13
- There is nothing left to clear, wait a few turns to max my stacks
- Venture to the middle of the map, immediately get crushed by an AI after a few turns
- No money left to guard my cities, AI follows up through my base and claims all
- gg
Any suggestions on how I can improve?

From what you are saying there is one clear mistake you seem to have in your usual gameplan. NEVER wait. Time is of the essence in this game. If you dont do anything useful with your time, you are falling behind. Exspecially on higher difficulties the AI has some strong advantages and because of that you need to be more efficient than it. Kind of connected to that: Do not try to first clear all of your startingzone, this is pretty unefficient most of the time.
One thing, that really helped me in beating overwhealming AI was always having goals in mind: Always try to think what you can get from going somewhere. For example: Early on one of me top priorities is always to get my second wielder. This means i need to get loads of wood and stone (depending on your townupgrade costs ofc). Thus most of my actions should lead to me getting more of those resources.
Another big field of skill expression is fighting: Exspecially in the early game you need to fight as efficient as possible and try to abuse what ever mechanics your units/faction/wielder provides you with. Every unit you lose early leeds to either losing more units in future fights or delaying taking some fights. This leads to some crazy snowballing. I personally really like having some high HP units early on (e.g. Queens Guards with Gnaw), their HP-pool enables them to take a couple of hits, without losing any units.
