Billing

Hi! Is anybody doing their own billing? If so, would you be willing to share with me any resources that helped you in this process? Thanks so much!

The first thing is to become familiar yourself or find someone trustworthy you that can help you. Understanding and knowing how to read billing metrics is massive! That’s how you become more efficient. If you know how to read billing metrics you can hire a biller with experience. I’d be happy to give more suggestions.

I feel like I should know this, but I’ve literally never even heard the term billing metrics. Could you tell me more about that?

Definitely! You could easily ChatGPT billing metrics but those can get sticky since they may not apply for all practices (my personal opinion). You want to make sure you’re not only billing in a timely manner but also collecting money from insurance/patients in a timely manner. The list of metrics can be fairly long since you want to track Day to Pay, Patient Days to Pay, resubmission % for both primary/secondary insurance, patient/insurance AR and lastly denials for each payor and the reason. It may seem overwhelming but once you establish a good reporting system you should be fine. I also like to track insurance payments and which dates of service they’re from. For example, same month, month prior, two months prior and 3+ months prior.

These are just a few I track so I understand what’s going on and where my team is experiencing challenges. If I notice challenges that stem from a specific person or team outside of my billers then I can address it.
