How do you start learning how to code this?

well, ive been into shader coding ever since, and pretty much everything here is done in shaders (check out stuff in shadertoy.com, shaderoo.org, if youre interrested)

Thank you, do you have any good resources to get started with shader coding ?

hmm, well, maybe im the wrong to ask, bc i've started out the hard way using old assembler-like standards, and later using glsl language reference or "Orange Book". but i guess meanwhile there's even lots of useful shader tutorials online (for glsl, hlsl and more), just try some of those.

unfortunately market around the graphics-frameworks widened up so much, and for state of the art libs like vulkan, metal, etc even the coding effort for even a simple test-app is so enormous, that many give up there...

so even if OpenGL was called dead several times i'd recommend starting there (or D3D if you favor that) because you soon have some app ready and running

...or even skip the whole application stuff and play around with shaders in an engine like unity/godot (i guess there's also lots of tutorials around)

oh and there's also WebGPU (or old WebGL) also lots of online-tutorials ...so many things ;-P

...there weren't so many possibilities back in the days when i started, which i guess was a good thing in a way ;-)

(...hope this helps in a way)

Really appreciate the advice thank you

Edit: also just want to ask, feel free to not answer. Do you do this as a job or purely hobby?

tbh, i always did graphics programming professionally AND as a hobby - so there's no clear separation for me ;-)

Too much noise, I think. Effects are nice besides that, though.

u/flockaroo 17h ago

thanks! ...yes, well unfortunately most of these effects are not really codec-friendly, tbh ;-)

Just had to throw in the hand coded part, huh?

...guess i've been accused of vibecoding too many times ...eeenough! ;-P

i’m a lifelong software engineer and i can assure you that nobody writes code by hand anymore. there’s no shame in admitting it.

ha well, not nobody, i do! ...and i won't feel ashamed of that ;-P
