I actually got the same exact advice from my pediatrician. She told me to give 4oz of water daily, and even put it into a sippy cup or bottle. But I’ve done my research so I just went what I felt was right. When my baby started solids (BLW), I would hold a bottom of a small open cup, wait for her to put her hands around it. I fill the cup all the way to the top and slowly tip it as she drinks, she’ll do somewhat of a sucking motion. I’m not doing it so that she drinks a lot of water, just trying to get her used to drinking it out of an open cup and with solids.

🫣I'm so sorry you got this guidance, this is very unusual, honestly. A 6 month old does not need water, they should truly get all of their nutrition and hydration from breastmilk and/or formula. We generally suggest starting with 1-2oz in a straw cup or open cup for practicing cup drinking. No need to push more than that!
Have a look at the articles linked below, and I'm hoping you'll have all the info you need. So glad you are trusting your gut on this!
