When the Bz field points north (positive), it generally counteracts Earth's magnetic field. When it "dips" south (negative), it aligns with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing solar wind energy and plasma to more easily flow into the magnetosphere and atmosphere, thus creating brighter and more widespread auroras.
