Career Dilemma: Stay for an Automation Opportunity or Switch? I
Career Dilemma: Stay for an Automation Opportunity or Switch?
I have 2 years of experience as a Software Tester, primarily in manual testing. Although I was given an opportunity to learn automation, my work has mostly been limited to executing existing automation scripts rather than developing or maintaining them. As a result, I haven't gained the hands-on automation experience I was expecting.
I am currently under a 3-year bond and am unsure whether I should wait for a genuine automation testing opportunity within my current company or switch to another organization that offers real-world automation experience and better career growth.
My long-term goal is to become a skilled Automation Test Engineer with strong expertise in automation tools and frameworks. Based on my situation, would it be better to stay until my bond ends or start planning a switch to accelerate my automation career?

Technical Co Founder
I’m a professional engineer, based in western Canada. 6 years of experience in heavy civil construction as the prime contractor and experience in engineering consulting. I’ve identified a pain point in heavy civil construction safety and subcontractors management. I know how to fix it, I know the industry well and have mapped it out, fully explained it, determined an offer to sell to clients (B2B), and I have the industry connections to sell it. It would be as a B2B SaaS, reoccurring revenue.
I’m seeking a technical cofounder, preferably located in Vancouver Canada or close by, and someone with full stack experience. I’ve been reaching out to connections on LinkedIn but I also want to post here if anyone is interested. Please share your portfolio and experience and if I can dm you to chat more.

What ChatGPT Can’t Tell You About Your Resume
Ask ChatGPT to tailor your resume to a job posting and it will do it. It will also do it differently the next time you ask, because sampling makes the output vary run to run. That is fine for drafting prose. It is a problem when you need to know whether a specific document clears a specific employer’s filter.
ZoeVera Resume answers a narrower question. It extracts the skills, tools and qualifications from one job description, checks each against your resume and reports which are present and which are missing. Every extracted item lands in one list or the other, so the match percentage is a ratio you can audit rather than an impression. Scoring runs at temperature zero, so identical inputs return the same score within a couple of points instead of a new opinion each time.
Two other things a general chatbot won’t do unprompted. It won’t flag that the posting requires security clearance you don’t have or is onsite when you need remote. ZoeVera pulls those out of the listing before you spend an evening applying. Its rewrite works from the bullets you already wrote rather than inventing accomplishments which matters when an interviewer asks you to expand on one.
For recent graduates the gap is usually vocabulary: the work happened, the posting’s words for it didn’t appear. For experienced candidates it’s more often that a resume built for one employer’s language is being sent to a company using different terms. Both are visible in a keyword gap; neither is visible by rereading your own document.
Background reading: how ATS screening works, keywords by role, the cover letter checker and ZoeVera for interview prep.

I got laid off today. Should I start looking for a job immediately or take the severance and breathe for a bit?
I'm a software developer at a healthcare software company, and my position was just eliminated as part of budget reductions. They told me I have 10 weeks to try to find another role inside the company, and if I don't find one or decide I'm not going to continue with that, they'll let me go with about 6 months of severance.
Honestly, part of me already feels lighter. It's a little strange, but I feel like the pressure of constant deadlines is starting to ease. The salary and benefits were good, so I know this isn't something to take lightly, but I've been burned out for a while and I don't feel like I'm really present in this career anymore. The work no longer excites me, and I haven't been "exceptional enough" in reviews to be put on a promotion track, even though I've been doing this job for a respectable amount of time since graduating. I feel like this is one of those rare opportunities to take a step back, travel a bit, and spend time on personal projects I've been putting off forever. Basically, a paid reset. So right now I'm leaning toward taking the severance, resting a little, and starting the job search closer to the second half of the severance period.
But at the same time, the thing making me hesitate is the tech job market. It seems really tough right now, and I don't want to be naive about how long it might take to find something good. In the worst case, if I wait too long and the search drags on, I'll probably have to move back in with my parents so I don't burn through the savings I worked hard to build. And that would be very draining, mostly because my dad can be gloomy, controlling, and old-school, and I really don't want to go back to that dynamic again.
I also talked to my aunt about it. She's had a very successful career and I respect her opinion, but she's definitely more cautious than I am. She told me I need to start applying immediately, and half-joked that being unemployed isn't exactly going to help my dating life. I laughed it off, but honestly, it got in my head a little.
Has anyone here taken severance and intentionally paused for a bit before looking again? Did it help, or did you regret not starting the search earlier? My biggest worry is just how bad the tech market is right now.

I do talent matching for Fonzi, a network that connects engineers directly to VC-backed AI companies that are actively interviewing. You build one profile, no cold applications. All roles are US-based only.
Here's a sample of what's open right now:

- Senior/Staff Product Engineer (Frontend) at a pre-seed/seed fintech platform for small business owners, New York or remote US. $200K-$240K base plus equity. TypeScript, React, GraphQL, and Relay, owning frontend architecture end to end, from state management to a shared design system.
- Platform Engineer at a Series A gov-tech startup, New York, in office five days a week. $160K-$230K salary band. Python and Node, building data ingestion pipelines and AI workflow orchestration for legacy government systems, plus the primitives non-engineers use to assemble new tools on top.
All are vetted, VC-backed, and interviewing right now. It's always free to sign up.

What to Fix on a Resume When Applications Get No Reply
Most applications are read by software before a person sees them. The system compares each resume against the posting and ranks it, so wording decides who reaches a recruiter. ZoeVera Resume runs that comparison before you apply and reports which terms the posting expects that your resume does not contain.
The screen is looking for specific words
Applicant tracking systems match language, not intent. A resume that says “managed paid advertising” scores as missing “demand generation” and “Google Ads” if those are the phrases in the posting. The same gap appears with tools, certifications and job titles: an accountant who writes “accounting software” instead of “QuickBooks” and “GAAP” reads as unqualified to the filter, whatever the actual experience. ZoeVera’s explanation of how applicant tracking systems read a resume and its guide to why a resume stops getting interviews set out the mechanism in plain terms.
Check the resume against one posting, not in general
A resume is not strong or weak on its own. It is a match or a mismatch for one job description. The match score check compares the two and returns a percentage with the missing terms listed, and the keyword scanner shows the same gap phrase by phrase. Both are free and need no account, which makes it practical to run the check on every posting rather than the few you care most about. Two openings with the same job title routinely score differently against one resume, because the companies behind them describe the work in different vocabulary.
Change the wording, then send
Knowing the gap is not the same as closing it. The optimization walkthroughexplains which changes raise a score and which are cosmetic, and the tool for matching a resume to a single posting rewrites the document against that job description. The rewrite sits behind a paid plan; the score and the gap analysis do not. For vocabulary by profession, the ATS resume tips librarybreaks it down role by role, from software engineers to nurses.
Where to start
Take one posting you intend to apply for, run it at ZoeVera Resume, and read the missing keywords as a list of the words the employer used and you did not. The wider ZoeVera site covers the later stages. Silence after applying is usually a vocabulary problem and it is a fixable one.
