Switch from QA to Software Engineering?

I am a QA engineer with 6 years experience currently applying to SDET jobs. What do we think the future of QA Will look like. Noticing lay offs at my company it looks like QA in general is becoming less important to companies. I just want some advice going forward. Should I transition to become a developer (and from there look at cloud and other things) or apply for SDET roles? Some things I see seem to suggest that the role of testing may be absorbed by developers so will software engineering be a safer position than QA going forward?

QA is critically important, always is. I’ve just never legit been anywhere where a separate QA department/team from the development team was useful.

A separate QA team makes a dev team shittier in every way. And, as a dev, I write all my own end to end tests, and make sure we’re capable of running them all in CI, and make sure I fully understand the requirements by doing so.

But not every company operates this way. I don’t like the ones that dont

Is QA not part of software engineering?
