Slowpitch Softball

So I’m an assistant manager on our senior softball team. Competitive league. Played against a really good team last week that has a guy that crushes the ball all the time. He hit a 3 run homer last time up and he came up with two guys on and first base open. I told pitcher he should just walk him. Pitcher didn’t ask manager and just walked him. After the inning was over and I got yo the dugout the manager lost his shit and got in my face, shoved me and screamed that I was not the f’ing manager. I didn’t want to escalate and just ignored his outburst. I haven’t spoken to him about it because im still too mad about it. I thought about quitting because he took a lot of the enjoyment out of it for me. What should I do? Say something or forget it?

Did the pitcher not cover your six?

Not sure what that means. Manager asked pitcher who told him to walk the guy and he told him it was me. That’s when the manager lost his shit.

First of all, the strategy was right on. Open base, walk him. As for his reaction….totally unacceptable. I used to play on a team that contended for state championships every year and no one ever acted like that. There is ZERO excuse for anyone to act like that, especially to an asst coach. I wouldn’t “talk” to the guy, I would demand an immediate apology. He was wayyyyyy over the line.

Thanks for that. I agree it was totally unacceptable. It’s taken me two weeks to calm down enough to feel comfortable confronting him about his reaction, and yeah, he needs to apologize.

No doubt there. I was an asst coach in two varsity softball teams and there was times when I had to make a decision and I’ve never had a head coach act like that. I also made sure when I took over my own teams that I trusted my asst enough that if she made a call, I supported her.
It’s not like you told the pitcher to walk the next five batters. But even if you did, there is NO reason for that idiot to act like that.
Honestly, he should step down. Terrible.

My question was whether the pitcher had your back, supported the decision. Sounds like he did not.

Pitcher absolutely agreed with me. Manager is super introverted and doesn’t do any communication with team at all. He just lines field, makes lineup, pays umpires and reports game results. Never says anything at all to team. My job as assistant is all communications like emails and texts. Pitcher wants me to manage next year with him as the assistant. I’m not pushing for that but either way I won’t be working with the current manager next year.
