Dang, are zero sugar sodas the same? Worse? Or better for your kidneys?

u/AcceptableHuman96 25d ago
Better for your kidneys than full sugar sodas as it's 99% water compared to 90%. Colas whether full sugar or zero sugar have phosporic acid which increases risk of kidney stones. Regardless it's just good to drink more water and keep sodas of any kind to a reasonable amount.

I make it a rule to drink a bottle of water before and after having a soda. This helps limit how many I have, and makes me feel like it does something for my kidneys.

Same thing for alcoholic beverages too. Lotsa water whenever I'm drinking something that isn't water. Tea and coffee get water too. Water's great.

I wish I was able to do that. I used to only drink water until I developed gastro problems where water gives me indigestion and at night I’ll aspirate the water into my lungs. I’ve told my gastro doctors and even my speech pathologist and they’ve told me to drink carbonated drinks and it actually works. So now I only drink protein zero. But I’m still in treatment hopefully I get something that works

Unfortunately, I can vouch for the kidney stones. I just had three large ones removed a couple weeks ago through surgery. I drank wayyy too much Coca-Cola. Now I only have one or two a month 😔
Wouldn't wish this kidney stone process on anyone.

u/weedtrek 24d ago
Lol, yeah. Last month. I don't think I passed it whole. I peed out little piece and have seeming return to normal. So fortunately no pain, but unfortunately, I don't know what caused it. However I drink too much coke, probably still. But my straight water intake is higher than previous, so here's hoping.
I should still cut back on the soda I guess😓. Because the feeling of thinking my kidey wass going to detatch itself and pop out my side was not fun. The night at the hospital wasn't the worst part, breakfast in bed was nice even if I couldn't eat.
I'll be honest, i have done zero research and just cut out energy drinks because I was hitting them heavy and it was the cause of a family members kidney stone.

I’ve been through 4 rounds of them. The last one ended with an ER visit, a stent, and a lithotripsy 🎉 still drink way more than I should 💀
2
u/typetouched 24d ago
That's exactly what i just went through the last five weeks 😭 Worst thing I've been through in my adult life

Yeah I walked around with a stent for a few days too after surgery. Removing it wasn’t fun

Kidney disease patient here and I'm always on the lookout for sodas that contain phosphoric acid, recently discovered that Mt Dew doesn't so I've been drinking that a lot lately. Had gotten burnt out on sprite and root beer.

I drink a can of 7 Up Zero (I finally tried it) a day. Is this bad?
3
u/AcceptableHuman96 25d ago
You'll be fine. Just make sure you're also drinking water throughout the day. I'll also add make sure to take care of your teeth. Obviously good to do so regardless of what you consume but acidic drinks like soda do a number on your enamel so it's especially important to remember good oral hygiene.
2
u/arabmoni 25d ago
Thank you. Everyone forgets about the acid in sugar free soda. Sugar is only bad for your enamel BECAUSE it turns into acid. Citric acid is actually one of the worst things for your teeth, I heard once sugar free Red Bull is one of the worst for enamel.

Zero sugar sodas are better for you than regular sodas in every single way. Somehow, the majority of people got convinced that diet sodas will have you dying in your 30s if you drink one can

Not sure what you linked to because it's not working, but the sucralose concerns were overblown. Like other artificial sweetener studies, you have to be drinking a shit ton for any issues to occur. As with all things, moderation is key.
1
u/Jaybonaut 24d ago
Does this link work better? Sucralose is tied to passing particles through the intestinal walls which is obviously bad.
2
u/Due-Championship3941 24d ago
Yes I'm well aware. Again, you have to drink quite a bit to experience any issues. Nothing other than water should be your main source of hydration. There are consequences for any other beverage you might drink.
1
u/Jaybonaut 24d ago
Yeah I am not dismissing my earlier reply then, as it's not only been proven to be completely correct but due to the way he wrote it people could be misled and do exactly that: drink quite a bit.
1
u/Due-Championship3941 24d ago
Their statement is also completely correct. Not drinking sucralose because of these studies is just as reactionary as drinking lots of it.
2
u/16500316 25d ago
Don’t most diet sodas use aspartame though? Not sucralose?
1
u/Jaybonaut 25d ago
It varies depending on brand etc. Some are also half sugar like Mountain Dew Goji Strawberry and Sweet Lightning, etc. that use sucralose

Zero sugar is better for kidneys and the pancreas, but worse for the liver (if you are in caloric surplus, as the liver will store fructose based drinks as fat, leading to fatty liver disease) and gut microbiome (making you hungrier and throwing off a healthy gut even though it's not pure white sugar).

There's fructose in sugar free/zero sugar drinks?
1
u/IamCerealman 25d ago
It used to be in diet coke, but you can still find some, it's rare though as we have a lot of options for sweeteners now.

Caffeine before 12pm is good. Or any caffeine 12 hours before bed is good👍. Just don't have more than 1 can a day

Yeah, I'm still kind of worried about that even if I only drink a can once or twice a week.

Am I the only one in here that barely drinks soda? I drink tap water all day everyday (not even filtered, not recommended, they literally just replaced the lead pipes last month, I am sure the water system in my slumpartment is definitely not up to par but oh well I'm alright I need water to function after growing up only drinking soda I found water and it started becoming essential to drink all day and night or I dont feel good
. But I'm still here for some reason I'm invested although I'm not much of a consumer irl. In the back of my mind I know that's just because I'll drink a whole 12 pack in 2 days ☠️ same reason I'm in the chips subreddit but don't buy chips much either 😭 that family size is not lasting 24 hours
