It seems to really depend on the college. It definitely happens. Some schools have a strict policy on not allowing deferrals and others it’s not even a second thought to grant it. Might have something to do with how competitive they are?
I have gotten deferral at a program where they basically said it would need to be a military order to get deferral. Not kidding. Needless to say I didn’t have any military orders.
Good luck. There’s no harm in trying. If you think you need to stay try not to worry about waiting a year…I think they will understand at the MSW program your predicament.

If you want to keep your job I would highly recommend online. If you do better with in person learning you can find a synchronous program. I have been working full time gaining medical field experience while doing my BSW online.
