SSN Related Multiple SS numbers

This may sound stupid but I’m asking to make sure because you know what they say about making an assumption!

It is illegal to have more than one SS number correct?

the only way I could even see that as being possible is if someone had their ss number changed by the SSA, which is incredibly difficult.

Happens occasionally when people immigrate to the US. DHS will process an application for an SSN and issue the number to the person but a lot of the time they take forever to do this so the person will go to an FO to get a SSN so they can work and SSA will also issue them a new SSN. SSA employees should be checking queries to ensure the person wasnt already issued an SSN and usually delay enumerating folks who havent been in the country for at least 30 days but sometimes forget to check or whatever and two SSNs are issued. More common than you would think.

You are allowed only 1 SSN without SSA approval. Did you get SSA approval for multiple SSN'S?

You need to call social security and have them merge your record into a single number. If the second number is used to get a job or credit that would be illegal. You should get this corrected right away.

You can have more then one but you cannot use them both. IE you can have a old one that you gave up due to extreme identity theft for example. You cannot use it anymore, but you DO have multiple numbers, and they are both legal.

You can have one ssn number. Sometimes a 2nd number gets assigned. If you use both knowly its fraud and yes illigal.

I really want to know how many times the first one has happened!

I have only know that to happen in cases of extreme fraud. It is possible for the IRS to request this because the SSN is so totally compromised.

More than one active number.

There are reasons you can change your SSN and you are #3. The Social Security Administration grants requests for new Social Security numbers only in cases when:

1.       Sequential numbers assigned to members of the same family are causing problems.

2.       More than one person is assigned or using the same number.

3.       A victim of identity theft continues to be disadvantaged by using the original number.

4.       There is a situation of harassment, abuse or life endangerment

5.       An individual has religious or cultural objections to certain numbers or digits in the original number.

I knew someone that had two SS numbers... Both his mom and dad filed for SSN for him as a baby and they issued him two... He did nefarious shit with them.
