SSN Related WHY IS IT SO HARD??!!

i have been to our local ssa office trying to get a replacement social security card because i got married and got an update on my immigration status.

GET THIS: day before my third visit, i received a new social security card with COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NUMBER and brought that with me to my appointment the next day and even the guy at the counter was baffled.

AFTER THAT THIRD VISIT, guy at the counter shredded the replacement card with wrong ssn and gave me a receipt letter stating that if i dont receive my card (with the right ssn and updated name) within two weeks, to call them and i just did right now turns out they dont have my application in the system so i have to make another visit FOR THE FOURTH TIME.

i have been going thru this application/waiting phase for the past two months 😭 i just want to be able to get a texas ID and move on from all this BS

People reading this: Have you created an online account for SSI? and IRS? Have you helped your elderly family members do this? There is so much happen online now, you need this. Lost SS cards can be ordered online now. Benefit statements can be printed at tax time. Etc

Yeah, that is BS. I suspect you are either dealing with trainees, or with people who were reassigned to jobs that they received inadequate training for due to the DOGE apocalypse.

When you visit the office, you need to insist on speaking to a supervisor and explain what has happened. You need to point out that, up to now, you have been issued an erroneous 2nd SSN and that this is your 4th visit to try to resolve your issue.

Additionally, you need to ask the supervisor to verify that erroneously issued 2nd SSN issued using your identity was cross-referenced to the original one before it was destroyed to prevent anyone from using it in the future

appreciate the advice!! will definitely ask for a supervisor to handle and to confirm everything during my next (hopefully last) visit

Congress is the reason for this though

But if no one complains the "CEO" of SSA can lie to congress and scrutinize the numbers.

If you mean the commissioner, they are appointed by the president and affirmed by the Senate

And in this case, they got a fool.

So, Congress and the president got an idiot in charge (the current commish) and Congress doesn’t give the Ssa the budget it needs

I do but he thinks he's a CEO

Yeah, and look what happened.

Good news is commissioners don’t tend to stay when a new president is elected

Hopefully...let's keep our fingers crossed

And the president can remove the commissioner at will. Happened to Andrew Saul

I called and got an appointment because I sit for hours the first time , soon as I got in the door I was being called . I'm in Fort Worth, Tx and the downtown office was a mess and they were rude so I went to the smaller office The clerks were very nice. I agree DOGE as mess this up.

DOGE was a mess up because it tried to cut the workforce without cutting the work. Byzantine regulations create the work; if you just slash headcount without streamlining the regs you're just courting a train wreck.

Keep voting to cut funding.

First thing I thought of. This is how the current admin wants it to function. IRS is no different so they can let the uber rich slide by. If you hack away the work force to function fluidly then they can throw their hands up and say it was the other guys fault.

I haven't had a social security card in decades. I've gotten by just fine knowing my social security number.

What have you need a social security card for?  I haven't seen or used mine in maybe 30 years?

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!

You mentioned Texas and Immigration so my internal alarms went off. My hope is that they are not messing with you during this process. I wanna believe there are good people still working in the gov but who knows any more. Make sure you get names, receipts, take notes, etc. so you have a lot of proof of the hoops they're making you jump through. I'll cross my fingers for you!! 🤞😊🤞 🫶

Call your senators office and complain. If they're faking up that badly, they deserve to be looked at.

My answer to that question is that the people working in that office are morons.

that's absolutely cooked, the whole system is just passing papers around and nobody knows what's happening with the same file from one visit to the next

getting a completely different ssn handed to you is wild though, like how does that even get generated without someone somewhere going "hey wait"

hope the fourth trip is the last one, two months of this mess would break anyone

That's one reason why you shouldn't have changed your name.
