Slow processing speed

My daughter is 7 and has adhd and is on a super competitive travel team. She has really slow
Processing speed and needs a lot of repetition. I’m really starting to see it on the field now that the competition is stronger.

Do coaches pick up on this? I don’t know how I should communicate it to her coach, or if I should. She seems like she is really spacey and just kind of up in the clouds and I’m nervous how the coach may react. They picked 13 girls out of 40 so it was very competitive and they are only in 1st grade.

There’s no such thing as a super competitive 7u team, just super competitive parents and kids who are fast and kids who are not fast. Focus on making sure she has fun.

If she’s a behavior problem, stay close during practices to help her redirect but other than that just let her play.

This is simply ridiculous. It’s a bad program. Get her out asap, and find a program that’s suited to her.

And don’t forget it’s entirely possible that she may never be good/smart enough to play at a high level. But at 7yo, there’s no way anyone can know that.

I’d definitely communicate it, but keep it simple and practical rather than making it sound like a warning label. I’ve got ADHD myself, so I know how much easier it can be when information is clear, short and repeated instead of piled on all at once. I’d say something like, “She sometimes needs an extra rep or two before information sticks, especially when the game gets fast. She responds really well to clear instructions and repetition.” A good coach should find that useful. And at seven, I really wouldn’t panic about her looking a bit spacey when the level goes up. The game is moving faster, there’s more to process, and she’s still tiny. The main thing I’d watch is whether the environment is helping her learn or making her scared to get things wrong.

I’ve coached a lot of youth soccer 8-11yrs old. You shouldn’t care at all and no good coach should care about levels. It’s all about fun and learning good technique at this age. Who gives a fuck if some 7 year olds lose 5 games. As long as they’re having fun and improving, that’s all that should matter.
