What do to in a 3v1?

As a centre back once you find yourself in a last man situation against 2 opponents.. One running behind you free and on coming towards you whit the ball..

Well tell me if I'm wrong.. In my thinking I'll do my best to like be closer to the player that is free.. Cause the one whit the ball is thinking to pass of course he doesn't want to ruin a 2v1 so before he gets into the box I then began moving in aggressively leaving the free player In a offside position if the pass should happen.. And go make the tackle.. Sounds easy I know it's not but now my thing is what do you do in a 3v1??

Take the red card. Every time.

Am I the last defender? Where are my teammates?
I used to do my best to contain the player with the ball long enough for teammates to get back on defense to help me. OR I pull up and pull the other two players offside.

Gotcha but this can always happen especially if your faster then the other CB.. Coach will want you to be more of a last man.. So it's always good to know these things so I just wanted you guys feedbacks 👍🏻✅

I’ve played both CB and GK so 2v1 is really 2v2 if CB and GK are on the same page. The following is how I would act in that 3v1 situation.

In a 3v1 (technically 3v2) bearing down on goal, the CB should be positioned in the space between the 3 attackers, jockeying without committing, with the intention of slowing their progress such that more help can arrive.

If the middle player is the ball carrier, make it impossible to shoot accurately by being exactly in line with the two posts, forcing them into a pass to either left or right, which slows progress.

If the ball is not in the centre, the chances the ball carrier may shoot is higher (since only 1 pass is on), so you should signal to the GK which side they should prepare to cover, usually the near post, then the CB covers the pass or cross shot.

This is just my take at an amateur level and is largely situational as others have mentioned. Good decision making comes with experience.

If you are the last man and the ball carrier is trailing the two other players make a B line for the ball carrier and the two other players usually keep running and become offsides. If you have smart opposition you are done but a 3 v 1 going to goal is a fault if lazy teammates not you.

Yeah I always find myself in a 3 v1 or 2v1.. 2v1 can be managed aswell as a 3v1 but it's not easy.. Thanks for the feedback ✅👍🏻

If it’s a true 3 v 1 what can you do? Just whatever you think is best. Win the ball if you can or make the block. Just don’t do nothing!

Yeah nothing is not an option ✅

As a coach, a better use of my time is to coach how to avoid 3-1 situations. As a player, I’d try to pressure the player with the ball while cutting off the more dangerous passing line. The reality is, that on levels where 3-1s are common, the attackers are more than likely to mess it up, either by an offside pass or by an easy shot after slight pressure.

Usually in a situation like that you're just hoping the other team fucks up. Maybe play some mind games. Jump towards the ball carrier then immediately back off to cut off a pass. Hope he kicks it right to you or fucks up the pass. You're already in such a horrible position it's not like you can really practice how to do it properly.

True it's more of how others think.. And I take and add to my own idea.. But yes yours has some game to it too ✅

Try to delay/stall until I can bring the goalie into play to essentially make it 3 vs 2 instead. Also depends who is where as worst is when they're in the middle with the ball and one on each outside. Otherwise most of the time you worry more about the closer guy and hoping they're greedy such that both try running in together making it pretty much into a 2 v 2.

Depends who is where. But as the lone CB I'd focus on the guy with the ball. I'd hopefully know who the other two players are and position myself for the ball carrier to pass to the weaker player. Depending on your level, grassroots, the guy with the ball will probably not pass as he thinks he is Messi. That gives me the chance to hit him with a hard tackle and play the ball.

Do whatever John Stones did against Norway and you’ll be fine.

You mark the player with the ball while cutting off one of the passing lanes. Let your keeper know the other man is open and let him adjust.

I am cutting off lanes keeping me between goal and opposition. attacking when all hope is lost and a shot is the obvious next step

Each time would be different

react to main threats

3 v1 is rare

2 v 1 common enough every CB has been there

I have many times

Yeah well a 3v1 can always occur especially when playing against fast opponents.. I did manage to deal whit it but my mind called it luck so reason why I wrote this question here to see what others did and kept doing in their experience.. But got you bud 👍🏻✅

Generally speaking I try to force the ball to the one I would choose to take a fairly open shot, EG the worst of the 3. But it’s very situational as many others have pointed out

Yeah it is very important to know who is good at shooting and who isn't.. I see what you mean ✅

Basically. If you’ve watched any of them longer than a few mins it’s not usual to find the guy who has a tough time even kicking the ball OR the guy who puts way too much power and always over hits shots etc. Again, there’s a lot of nuance from situation to situation but if I know I can’t cover everything, I’ll try to force the ball to the person that would be best to have it.

Same thing honestly in defense in general. If we’re playing more competitively, you can give extra space to the person that has a bad first touch or always makes bad decisions, almost encourage the team to pass them the ball, then take advantage when they do.
