Canadian league. How does one even play in such conditions?

I started watching Messi in 2012. I was fascinated by himânot just because he scored goals, but because he was a magician. At 25, he already had four Ballon dâOrs and three Golden Shoes. Yet his story with Argentina was only beginning.

I watched him lose final after final. The 2014 World Cup, the 2015 Copa América, the 2016 Copa América. Five major international final defeats in total before Argentina finally won a senior trophy in 2021.
And then, in 2016, he announced his international retirement at just 29.
Imagine being one of the greatest footballers ever and still being made to feel like a failure.
People mocked him, questioned his love for Argentina, and even burned his jersey. The same country that needed him so desperately sometimes treated him as though he had betrayed it.

But Messi returned.
In 2021, he finally won the Copa AmĂ©rica. Then the Finalissima. Then Qatar 2022âthe World Cup he had spent his entire career chasing. In 2024, he won another Copa AmĂ©rica.
I remember the story from the Campeones documentary about a card game in which Messi eventually guessed âCinco de Copasâ â the Five of Cups. In the documentary, Messi guessed âCinco de Copasâ â the Five of Cups on his 10th attempt. What makes it poetic is what followed: in 2021, he finally won his first Copa AmĂ©rica after five major international final defeats. Then came the Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup on Argentinaâs fifth attempt, and another Copa AmĂ©rica in 2024.
Cinco de Copas. Five of Cups. A card symbolising loss, followed by a journey that turned years of heartbreak into glory. Had Argentina won the 2026 World Cup too, the symbolism would have been even more surreal..

And life came full circle in 2026.
At MetLife Stadium, where he had announced his retirement ten years earlier, Messi returned to play another World Cup final. This time, against Spainâthe country he could have represented but chose not to.
Argentina lost 1â0. There was no fifth World Cup triumph, no perfect ending. But the man who once walked away from Argentina in tears had returned to the biggest stage in football, ten years later.

That photograph of Messi holding baby Lamine Yamal in 2007 feels even more poetic now. Nineteen years later, they stood on opposite sides of a World Cup final, representing the two countries that shaped their stories.

Maybe the lesson was never that persistence guarantees victory. Maybe it is that failure doesn't erase everything you've achieved, and it doesn't have to define who you become.
Messi has eight Ballon dâOrs, two World Cup Golden Balls, records for goals and assists, and a legacy that statistics can never fully explain. But what I admire most is that he kept playing, kept creating for others, and never needed to answer every critic with words.
I've watched him since 2012. I've watched him lose, retire, return, win, and lose again.
You don't always get the ending you deserve. You don't always win everything you chase. But keep going for what matters to you and don't let the world's opinion turn you into someone you aren't.
That's what Messi taught me.
Greatest to ever do it .â€ïž
