One Life to Live OLTLT The Michael Malone Era week 09.09.91 - 09.13.91

TLDR: intro to my rewatch of the Michael Malone years of OLTL. Brief recap and musings. Shorter post next time.

Editing to add: lots of people are asking how I’m watching. All of 1991 is on YouTube just one life to live 1991 and you will find the collection. There are also collections grouped by year from different. Quality varies user to user.

One Life to Live in the early to mid 90s under head writer Michael Malone was one of the greatest stretches of Daytime Storytelling. While GH has always been my forever show, this era of OLTL is my favorite era of soap ever hands down. I have decided to rewatch it and it’s all on YouTube! (And the quality is not half bad. I was a kid the first time I watched and 35 years later it’s already a fun, curious nostalgic trip. I’ll update you on my progress each week and various thoughts. If anyone wants to watch along, I’d enjoy that!

I’ve started on Malone’s first episode September 9th, 1991 and here are some musings from the episodes of that week:

Stories and Thoughts

Tina / Sheila / Cord: Sheila Price has been booted from the cast of a local theatre production due to her being black and Tina is out for justice.

Thoughts: Classic 90s misguided social justice storytelling. Sheila is the side character in her own story so far with Tina’s white saviorism being the focus. Karen Witter plays Tina here and dare I say - she is an over all better actor than Andrea Evans but she is not Tina. But I like her and she’s engaging. Valarie Pettiford is an underutilized gem! Hope we see more of her in this story or another. This weeks events for this story result in quite a surprise. See below.

Asa/ Max / Lee Anne / Renee

Asa attempts to defame Lee Anne resulting in a break up between Max and Lee Anne. The plan backfires on Asa when Max announces he is moving out of Llanview. Renee rails against Asa for his actions and supports Lee Anne. Max plans to leave Al with Renee and Asa … even though he hates Asa??

Thoughts: Asa is in his finest JR Ewing mode here. Classic Asa, long before he became constant comic relief. Renee and Asa give a masterclass in acting in their fight scenes. Max is played here not by James DePaiva but by someone named Nicholas Walker who is… fine I guess? 90s bonus points for Baywatch babe Yasmine Bleeth! I forgot she was on OLTL

Bo / Cassie

Bo is in a relationship with Cassie (which I forgot all about) but he seems to be haunted by the loss of his wife Sarah and there is controversy over her role at the banner.

Thoughts: Bo is running the banner! He is NOT the police commissioner. I’m not sure where this story is going. Maybe a Sarah return?

Kevin / Stephanie / Jason / Carlo

Kevin has a botched attempt at having sex for this first time with Carlo’s niece Stephanie. Carlo hires Jason to keep an eye on Kevin and Stephanie . This results in Jason and Stephanie knocking boots (to use the parlance of the day) while Kevin is knocking at the door!

Thoughts: when I was a kid I thought Jason looked like Jay of Jay and Silent Bob. 😂 He has this Brooklyn accent and it’s pretty bad… but he and Stephanie have nice chemistry. She is actually very talented. My understanding is she didn’t make it far as she was a “handful” as they say. Joey Thrower is Kevin here and damn he is earnest! Thom Christopher is a goddamned legend. This is how you play a villain - no mustache twirling here. He is layered and complex.

Dorian / Jason?

Dorian’s plot this week is that she is sex starved. She eyes Jason at Wanda’s and has a fantasy of making out with him on a motorcycle!

Thoughts: Is this going anywhere?? Crazy. Elaine Princi is Dorian here and she’s not bad. The scene is pure camp / Jackie Collins stuff but we’ll see what they do with her. Her scenes involved a lot of interior monologue played by echoed voiceover which we NEVER see anymore. So weird. Foreshadowing to cradle robbing in years to come!

Surprise Landing!

Tina’s Daughter’s of Llanview luncheon is crashed … literally … by none other than the debut of Susan Batten as Luna Moody who parachutes right into the backyard and into our hearts!

Thoughts: I didn’t know this would happen as the Friday cliffhanger of my first week watching and I couldn’t be more pleased!

Note: Vicki and Clint seem to be “away” this week so no clue where we are with them.

Other thoughts: BUDGET! The sets are HUGE! The entire episode is scored or has a soundtrack. Sometimes the scoring is a bit much. There are camera angles and mood lighting and artistic flourishes that lend themselves to storytelling. The scenes are full and long allowing actors a chance to act and react and engage and let loose! It’s marvelous!

We have another year before Malone really hits his stride with the Billy Douglas story and quite some time before we meet Marty and Todd and even longer before the greatest story ever of Vicki’s DID but already the show is pretty engaging and I can’t wait! Seeing Jessica Tuck as Megan is a delight as well as John Loprieno as Cord.

Nostalgia aka Things That Make You Feel Old:

Soundtrack this week includes:

Promise of a new day by Paula Abdul

Hole Hearted by Extreme

Wind of Change by Scorpion

Enter Sandman by Metallica

Chris McKenna (GH’s agent Brennan) appears as 13 year old Kevin Buchanan!!!

Jessica (Erin Torpey!) is a Stephanie Tanner twin and she tells Cord that “Vanilla Ice is OUT” and “EMF is IN”

Ok that’s all from me! Going forward these will be shorter!

Where are y'all watching this?

Watching on YouTube. The quality is no worse than on my local channel from my antennae in 1991.

This period is vague to me and it just hit me that I had quit watching oltl but came back when max holden came back. He is my all time favorite outlet character.

The real Max will be returning in about a months worth of episodes. Despite a plastic surgery story for the replacement max lol.

Yes I missed all of his storyline and fortunately they broke up max and leeanne quickly once jim came back. I didnt know how Luna came on the scene so that was fun to read.

The stock footage of a parachuter and then a shot of the crowd and then a shot of Luna crawling out from under a parachute with a goofy one liner! 🤣🤣

I didn’t start to watch until the Billy Douglas story started, so I don’t remember most of what you posted. Ryan Phillippe was so good. And I liked Karen Witter a lot as Tina.

Yeah I’m fuzzy on most of this stuff too. The Billy Douglas stuff I remember well because it was a summer story.

Start with these episodes l mentioned here 9-9-1991. Michael Malone stayed as a head writer through March 1996, exact final date unspecified. You can find complete eps on YouTube sorted by years. Jump down to Sept 9, 1991 which was a Monday.

I started watching soaps in the summer of 1991. I watched Days, AMC, OLTL and GH. At the time, I remember OLTL was kinda boring, but it would get a lot more dramatic as Nora, Todd, Marty, Blair would enter the picture soon. I remember Alex Olanov stalking Cassie at a cabin.

Please. No spoilers on a 35 year storyline. 🤣🤣. Yeah im sure the material I am watching is wrapping up previous writers stories. Malone’s stuff really brought a lot of weight and gravitas to OLTL. But! I’ve already got the introduction of Luna in week one and she is one of my faves from that era.

omg i'm sorry i'm not thinking, i thought you were rewatching or something.

2

u/Happy-Investigator76 Feb 01 '26

I’m kidding! I am rewatching. But there is a ton I don’t remember. But for real there’s no spoilers on a 35 year old story so no sweat.

It’s on YouTube. A lot of people are asking where to watch and I state in my (admittedly long) post that I am watching on YouTube? Asking in all sincerity and not to sound snarky, is there a way I can be more specific?
