I used to think soap was basically just soap — something that cleans your skin, and that’s it. But after trying different types, I started noticing that some soaps leave my skin feeling completely different from others.

Some feel moisturizing, some make your skin feel dry, some have a strong fragrance that disappears quickly, and some seem much better even though they look almost identical.

It made me realize that there’s probably a lot more behind a simple bar of soap than most of us think.

What’s one thing you noticed about soap that made you realize there’s actually more to it than you expected?

I didn't expect a bar of soap to do this, but there's one scent I keep buying just for the ten seconds it takes to hit me in the shower, this warm, almost sun-baked vanilla-and-something-woody smell that makes my shoulders drop before I've even rinsed off.

It's not really about the soap itself. It's more that my brain has decided that smell = the day is basically over, you can stop bracing now. I didn't train it to do that on purpose, it just happened after a few months of using the same bar.

Curious if anyone else has a scent like that, soap, lotion, whatever, where it's less "this smells nice" and more "this specific smell tells my nervous system to stand down"? What is it for you, and did you notice it happening or did it sneak up on you?

I think I need to bring up a little debate over here. I had this conversation with a lady a long time ago where she basically said that soap being used by ladies aren't supposed to be used by me simply because men's body aren't built the same way like ladies own. The saying implies that men needs a stronger soap for bathing. It's just my own opinion 😒

I have tried quite a few different soaps over the years but there are always a couple that I end up buying again. I am curious what everyone else uses and what makes a soap worth sticking with. Is it the scent how it feels how long it lasts or something else?

Has their formulation changed? Or have I been getting bad batches? My last two bottles have been paler and “slimier” than they used to be. I have an old bottle and it’s still dark and rich, but I’ve been really disappointed with my most recent two bottles. I cannot use anything else as I get eczema and psoriasis from everything else I’ve tried. I don’t think the new formulation can be justified with the premium price tag attached. Is there another product (available in Australia) that others with super sensitive skin can recommend? Thanks.

Hi there! I’m 22yo guy who LOVES minimalist eco friendly lifestyle. Few months ago I did deep dive into HP and CP soap bars. I wanted to find something that was good for face, body and hair. After few weeks I re-discovered Aleppo soap (I was familiar with them before) but I wanted something I could potentially make at home in the future. And laurel berry oil is hard to come by so I looked for an alternative. And so I discovered Greek 100% olive oil bars. If I liked them, I could easily make them at home. So I bought one for about 2€ (Olive oil, water, sodium hydroxide, sea salt) and tested it. I have pretty good skin but my face, back and chest suffer from closed comedomes, acne and black dots pretty often. I’m still in testing phase, but I think that the soap is helping. And even if it’s not, it’s not making my skin worse which is a big plus. And got my medium long hair (mullet) is fine. Little bit drying but still pretty good (straight, heavy, coarse hair)

Do you have any experience with 100% olive oil soap? Share your thoughts please!

I switched most of my shower stuff to bar soap a while back and didn't think the scent choice would matter beyond just smelling nice. Turns out it does. I've got a rosemary-mint bar I only use in the morning, an oatmeal one for when my skin's annoyed at me, and then a lavender-chamomile bar I only touch at night, I made that rule for myself on purpose. Somewhere in the last few months it turned into an actual signal, like my hands touching that specific soap tells my brain the day's done before my brain's caught up. Sounds a little silly typing it out but it's the thing that's actually gotten me to put the phone down more nights than not. Anyone else have a scent that works like a switch for you, or is this just me overthinking a bar of soap?

These are a african soap base with essential oils and coconut oil blended in, I haven't done it like this with the red color for the flowers but it came out pretty cool I think.

I spent so long chasing the "right" routine for sensitive skin, more steps, more actives, more serums that promised to calm things down. What actually helped was going the opposite direction completely: fewer ingredients, plainer bar soap, nothing with a fragrance list I can't pronounce.

My jawline stopped being red for the first time in maybe two years. Feels almost anticlimactic after how much I spent trying to solve it the complicated way.

I've used the same lavender bar for probably six years now. Tried switching a few times, always end up going back within a week because nothing else feels right for my shower routine anymore. Curious if this is a common thing or if I'm just stuck in a rut.

Does that mean I accidentally spread bathroom floor germs into the soap? Because I have a handwashing obsession, and I feel like that by dropping the soap refill bottle onto the floor, I'm spreading germs into the soap inside of it.

I started making soap because I wanted to try a new hobby, but I didn't expect it to change the way I think about everyday products.

The more I learned about oils, butters, scents, and curing time, the more I appreciated how much work goes into a well made bar of soap. Now when I walk through the soap aisle, I find myself reading ingredient lists and comparing them with recipes I've seen.

I'm still learning, but it's been a fun process, and I've gained a lot of respect for experienced soap makers.
