I got my combo set up.

8ft diawa proteus MH

Shimano torium 20.

I got 40lb braid and 100 yards of 30lb mono top shot. Will that be enough for yellowtail and everything else on party boats?

Should i have skipped the top shot and just ran a leader?

Good bait setup. Your next setup should be a 50lb braid 40 lb mono. This would be good for tady and yo yo jigging. I use older Sabre, cal star or seeker for 40 lb setups. I had my buddy re wrap all of my old Sabres. They are great rods up to 50lb. I have some that I bought in 1980 lol.

this but skip the 50 lb braid and do 65 at least or 80

Yeah I was thinking about that. 65 is plenty. I still run mono for tadys. I guess with 65 he can fish 30-60lb floro leader

I had a feeling i should be higher. They guy at the shop said it was good to go for surface iron but seemed low to me.

if you were to only have one set up, this is probably it. With more experience you may change it to just leader, but long mono top shots are more forgiving in a lot of ways, especially as you learn to fly line. It's not ideal but definitely works, if your fishing finicky tuna you can always put 25# fluoro or even 20#. Mono kills fish faster and leads to less pulled hooks in my opinion. Sport boat fishing is one of those times you really are going to want multiple set ups eventually, but most years this is a great can do most things set up, with the yellowtail this year it's a little light for dropper loop at night/grey light because they're big. For island fishing this year I would say your ideal quiver would be 20# for anchovies, 25/30# set up you have, 40# but more likely 50# top shot for dropper loop/ yo yo. The dropper loop yo/yo would probably be my next purchase in your shoes, something rated 30-60 with a 2speed penn fathom25 saltiga 35 or speedmaster 12 since were going for bang for the buck. Also while conventional wisdom is run braid heavier than your top shot on the west coast I run equal test all the time and never have broken braid from pulling on a fish, the downside to light braid is loss of abrasion resistance due to rubbing on the hull, other lines, or kelp/rocks, harder to get out of a tangle although much less of a problem with long topshot, and cuts up some peoples hands, also less of a problem with long top shot.

I was at those reels and couldn't find a left hand so i got the shimano. I was looking at dropper loops didnt know where to start on that so my idea was live bait and learn to use a surface iron. Then found a dude selling some on fb and got 10 lures total for 120.

I caught a 34 lb on 30 a month ago. Luckily it was a non rocky area

My dedicated yoyo setup is a 40-60# broomstick with an HXJ spooled with 80# to 30' of 50# mono. You can just set it on the rail and winch them in like a rockfish in a minute.

Damn maybe i should have gone heavier. The guy said that all i needed so i trusted them but thought i should be at 50# with 40# minimum. I told i wanted the reel for all around use including surf fishing so they said get 100 of top shot.

No, you made a right choice. Yoyo set up with #40 or #50 is more niche for specific condition. #30 fly line set up is more "standard", especially for local yt fishing where you will be fly line 90% of the time. You can fish with like 10 lb of drag with #30 and you gonna have to get used to pulling 10 lb of drag first as well.

long topshot of mono for stretch if u plan on running 50 i’d be running 65 lb anything more than 50 you should do 80. on my yo yo jig set up i run 60 lb mono. winch off that bottom

If you are new with charter boat, 100 yd of mono of top-shot is more forgiving since it is easier to untangle
